Front Engine Cover Oil ??
« on: February 10, 2010, 11:43:45 AM »
Ive started getting Gertie ready for the big ride next month to Wootton Bassett, i decided to tart her up a bit by fitting some stainless steel bolts to the engine cover. The road salt has taken its toll, when i pulled the old bolts out the bottom two (of 3)on the right looking from the front came out oily?.
Any ideas what to expect when i pull it off to investigate (next week hopefully) ill be pulling it off to check the points anyway.
I dont recall this being there when i did the rebuild just over 1000 miles ago

The o-ring on the ignition 'bean can', or the front main seal, would be my first and second guesses .

Possibility of a leak around one of the timing cover bolts, loose bolt, or gasket gone bad .

The O-ring (seal on some models) on the bean can would be my guess also.

Hope its nice and simple like the Bean can spigot O ring. It's also possible for oil to get inside the bean can through the drive shaft mechanical seal and then drip out of the front cover.

Stupid is.....the bottom two bolts are in the timing chain cover not the front engine cover...Dooh theres slight discoloration on the engine case from oil but no visible leaks  phew

There is a 28x47x7 oil seal in the Timing case Cover for the crankshaft ball bearing. Getting to it is a real PITA. I would expect a larger amount of oil with a seal failure. Hope it the bean can O-ring...   Monte
