Galled nuts

AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I attempted to remove my exhaust pipe today, and it was fairly tight, so i used a rubber mallet to knock the end of the tool, and the finned nut on the exhaust started to slowly move. Didn't actually free up and seemed to require persuasion the whole way, of course when it came off all threads were rooted.

Then i went looking n the web to see what i coould do next, and that's when i found all the warnings on this nut galling. Inluding if it doesn't free up after a 1/2 turn STOP, and try different techniques.

Bugger, well it's too late now, I've now got a nut with almost no thread and an exhaust flange with only about a third of thread left, possibly not enough to use.

Does anyone have any idea on what my next move should be, or am I up for the cost of another head?

There will be a smear of high temp anti seize applied when re-assembling anything here, no sign any was used before.

John

If it is the right side head, I have a good one you can get for real cheap (postage only).

Here's one solution for stripped exhaust nut threads.

Hope it's helpful for you.
good luck

checked out that web page, and it also links to a UK webpage with motorworks Both sites together gave a me a very good picture of what I need.

$200 AUD including postage I think is a lot cheaper than any other alternative.

This bike is also becoming a project where the more I pull apart the more I have to fix.

I might ring Munich Motorcycles in the morning and see what they offer in the way of suggestions and $$$.
I need to get another sidestand whilst i have the left exhaust pipe off anyway, that was the reason i attempted to remove the exhaust in the first place.

High temp anti sieze is also on the shopping list, i think we have some nickel based antisieze at work for stainless steel marine application.

Does anybody in your region, weld up the old threaded area, and then then cut new threads into the weld area ?

I had this done about 11 years ago, for a cost of about $100US per head .

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

Specify aluminum (or aluminium) when you are calling around.

Went to the bike wreckers and he sent me to the local guru machinist that i know does all the work for the vintage cars in the car club I also belong to.

He went through what was needed and when i asked what he thought about the mdo, he recomended giving that a go first.

Munich motorcycles hadn't heard of them, but gave advice in lgetting it all welded up.

Seeing as this mod is reversible I've gone online to motorworks.co.uk and ordered a set, turns out when you take VAT away it's only $150 AUD. Quite cheap.

I'll let you all know how it goes.

Well the exhaust nut mod came in, very easy to fit, no exhaust leaks. Looks like it was a winner.
Purists may scoff at the look, but it's not a concourse bike, and I think it looks fine.
Took it for a ride and I think I was drooling down the side of my helmet.
Been a month since I took it off the road for repairs.
Post some pictures later.

Took me forever to get the bike back on the road this time, while i was waiting for the exhaust pieces, I removed the sidestand and welded up the worn bits, then used the angle gringer and hand file to clean up and return to original dimensions. Bike now stands more upright on the sidestand and no more possible falling over if the ground doesn't slope the right way.
Also decided the swing arm bearings needed doing, and then discovered the driveshaft universal was a bit dodgy, ordered another bearing and then together with machinist had to work out the mod to make the aftermarket uni fit.

I've replaced half the bike now since I bought it 12 months ago.

Good job John.

One of these days I'm going to do a weld and grind job on my main stand so it doesn't go so far over centre.

I'm glad you are out riding again, John!  And just in time for summer!

That is nice that you repaired your sidestand, but these engines are happiest when you use the centerstand.  Just in case you had not heard, yet.  And I will repeat, always shut off your petcock(s).  I normally turn mine off when I am approaching my destination, to lower the fuel level in the float bowls while parked.

It is very cold here, right now, with snow on the ground and light flurries most of the time.

Luckily I am getting old enough that I can see the acceleration of the sense of passage of time, so warm weather will be here soon!  (15 March, or so...)
