RS handlebar on an R65?
« on: November 03, 2009, 11:03:16 PM »
[size=14]I was planning on puting an R100RS handlebar on an R65. A mechanic told me that it might be too narrow and the instrument cluster could interfere with the hand controls and that I would be better off using an R65LS or R90S/R100S handlebar instead. Is that correct? Has anyone successfully installed an R100RS handlebar on an R65?

I have UNsucessfully tried to install a RS bar on my R65.

It might work if you plan on removing the plastic dash panel.
It would be even better if you were to remove the stock instruments and use a digital device like monte has on one of his bikes (see below).

As it is, the master cylinder hit it way before the throttle was fully installed.

Looking at that picture, I wonder if the RS model has taller risers.
I am thinking the master cylinder might conflict with the top triple-clamp, as well. :(

Handlebar from a Suzuki GS400E (1979-84) works fine on a r65ls, and is a simple straight forward swap.  I am using it as we speak.  It gives it a nice rise of about one and a half inch and is wider by 3 inch in total.  I like it better than the original narrow handle bar (less forward lean and less stress on the wrists).  Plus probably way cheaper to replace.  Hope it helps.

[size=14]Thanks, Rob. That is what I needed to know.

Actually, the RS bar is flat, has no rise, and the clamps put it about 1 cm above the top of the upper tripple clamp (which is why I wanted to use it).

Maybe clip-ons?

Our tubes are of a pretty small diameter, though; and you would have to modify the breastplate for clearance.

[size=14]R65Singh,

That is exactly the opposite of what I wanted to do. I want the bar to be lower and narrower (I am an R100RS rider and prefer that riding position to the position of the high an wide US bar on my R65).

Thanks again, Rob,

I guess I'll have to go with an R65LS bar. It's only 1.5 cm wider than the R100RS bar and I can probably live with its short rise, if that is what it takes for the master cyllinder to clear the instrument cluster. I don't undstand why BMW changed the instrument cluster in the first place. The one on the R100RS is more compact and easier to remove (when needed to in order to change bulbs) than the one on the R65.

I installed an rs bar when the WH8LA2 had her new dress. As the bar was much narrower than the old bar I made outcuttings in the instrumentpad to make room for the resevoir. As risers I used the old fittings from the rs bar and dremelled them into shape.

The result is a bit crude but as the cuttings and the risers are partly hidden by the fairing I live with it.

I have had the RS bars on my 82 R65 since 1986.  The only problem is with the position of the brake and clutch and this is because of the Don Vesco Fairing I have on the bike. I had bars that came with this fairing that had a 1 inch rise still using the stock wiring and cables with both bars. When I bought my 75 R90/6 in 85 I put a RS fairing on it and want the same riding position on both bikes. I still have the stock high rise Controls and cables on both bikes if I need to change back to stock for some reason.

And all this time I thought you already had the low bars on your R65.
Sorry.

Yes, if you have more than 1-2" of rise on your current bar, you have the "U.S." bar.   I have the low bar (Euro or "S" bar) on mine.  It is perfect.

A lot of the LS bikes that were imported to the U.S. came with a black U.S. bar.  Beware!

This is what my bike looks like:
