Dyna Ignition Coils
« on: October 13, 2009, 06:47:49 PM »
Placed and order with Motorrad Elektrik today, a bunch of parts for the LS, and ignition wires for the oilhead .

I asked Rick Jones, about the expected service life for a Dyna coil, and he said that in the 15 years he has been selling them, he has had only 2 confirmed failures from customers .

Rick said that 20+ years is the claim from Dyna .

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

Hi Bob, we must be the only 2 awake (although it's lunch time here so I should be).

I bought my replacement twin lead coil from a company in Queensland, Australia probably more than 15 years ago. I think they were buying a new coil from a Kawasaki and bolting on a small aluminium angle adapter plate and adding a couple of wires and terminals to make it a straight swap over from the crack-o-matic that was giving me grief on the LS.
Hasn't missed a beat since and I recon an awfull lot of aussie BM's are running them.

Cheers Bruce

Well, it's only 1940 (Tuesday) here in the Phoenix area, but the site has been unusually quiet for about a week or so .

The coil that's on the LS now is not any where near OEM, I've never seen a coil like it , just want to get something I can trust for the long haul .

I also have one of his coils for my '79.  I haven't installed it yet.  Did you make up a bracket to attach it to the frame?  I haven't quite figured out how I am going to attach it yet.

My 81 and 83 both have the Dyna coil. Both bikes OEM coil bracket fit the Dyna perfectly; no mods required. Bob's 84 ought to be cake, too. Not familiar with the 79's coil attach method. I've seen some older BMWs with the Dyna mounted aft of the relay positions.

Should you fab a bracket, make it a sturdy one. The Dyna is a chuck of weight to hang on thing sheet metal.

The coil comes with a bracket, it bolts right up to an '81 and later bike with the single dual output coil .

I have one of Rick's Dyna coils mounted on the aft bracket on my March 1980 R65.  Works great with the Omega Ignition, Ricks plug wires and NGK Iridium plugs.

5 years and counting....   [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif]

I also purchased the Brown Dyna coil from "motor- elek"  and blue wires for my 1987 R65. Everything fit perfect and Rick's directions and pics were great.  The bike starts better now..
