R65 1981, Oil level - rear swingarm
« on: October 25, 2009, 10:31:16 AM »
When I should check the oil level in the rear swingarm I inserted a screwdriver in the filler plug. The screwdriver was dry. My riders handbook says the level should be 2 mm up the screwdriver.
Is there another way to check oil level? Where can the oil go?
I see no leaks.

There's a specified volume of oil, and I don't have a manual handy to look it up .

My memory wants to say 150-180 ml.

If the input seal into the final drive is going bad, the oil can seep into the final drive, usual symptom of this, is an overflowing final drive, oil running out of the mushroom looking cap at the top of the final drive, it's the breather vent for the final drive .

This is not unusual. First time I checked my drive shaft oil I found some had migrated to the final drive.  Odd thing is when I put it back where it belonged it seemed to stay put or at least it migrates very very slowly.

This is not something to worry unduly about.  I think Snowbum says the drive shaft will survive just fine with very little oil so with luck no damage has been done.

150cc of gear oil in the driveshaft is spec for the 1981. It's such a small amount that I drain and refill on a fairly regular basis.     Monte
