New Electronic 'Bean Can' From Motorrad Elektrik
« on: September 08, 2009, 08:54:47 PM »
This got mentioned in a thread about hard starting .

Rick Jones, owner of Motorrad Elektrik, has just started selling a full electronic 'bean can' for '81-'95 airhead bikes, no more mechanical centrifugal advance for ignition timing .

Riding all year long since 1993 .
I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

I'm sure it will have a few 'bugs' to get worked out, once it gets out into real world usage .

But I'm willing to bet that Rick Jones has got a real dependable upgrade for the airhead bikes with electronic ignition .

Won't be too surprised to see this item sold out quite often in the next year or so .

Looks like a good idea/product.   If I hadn't already a spare(used) bean can around I'd consider making the investment.    IF I end up with another airhead in the garage, well, it may get this unit.   I've been very pleased with the Dyna Brown HT coil and also the LED rear tail light array that I 've bought from Rick over the past couple years.

I would send Rick Jones an email, and see what he says, I know he ships parts all over the world, to help stranded 'round the world rider' types .

Email address is : motoelekt@mindspring.com .

As "nhmaf" has said, I have also ordered the brown Dyna Coil, blue ignition wires, and the LED tail-lite. The coil is going on a 1987 R65, I hope it will be some kind of an improvement. [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif]

Everyone calls the Dyna coil for our favorite motorcycle the "brown" coil. Just don't be surprised when the unit shows up and it's orange-y  :)

Just got done installing my nnew Brown Dyna coil, blue wires and LED Tail-lite. Rick from Motorrad Elektrik provided very detailed instructions and pictures.. I also installed a new mono shock from Wilbers.USA.  It is a YSS skock with 60 dampening positions and infinite preload adjustments. The shock, believe it or not was harder to install than all the farkles I purchased from Rick.. Clearance issues and the upper shock hole was under sized and I had to use a rat-tail file to get the shock bolt through the hole.. Almost needed an xtra hand of maybe a cycle lift.. Picture without farkles.. [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif]

I've been running one since June, and an Omega charging unit since July.

It's nice to have a reliable bike now- no surprises. I've run the unit about 12k then through Arizona heat and Deep South funk.  The idle's kinda lumpy- I have a beta unit- and at idle the bike'll pop and backfire, but that's not too bad.  Besides, the new beancan hasn't failed yet.

Are you attributing the "pop and backfire" issues to your new ignition and charging components? To me, the odd idle behavior sounds more like a fuel/carb/air system concern.    Monte

Is there anyone else that has installed the new "Beancan"  from Motorrad Elektrik?? I would like to know if there are improvements in smoothness or power in the 4000-6000RPM range??  Also has anyone installed the upgraded diode board and voltage regulator?? [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif]
