Driveshaft loosing oil

My driveshaft is loosing oil but the final drive is gaining oil. Not a lot in either case but I assume that oil is migrating "downhill". Is it a case of needing to replace the oil seal or are thenere any other answers?

You assume correctly, Dave.

There is a seal between the two.  That would be item #5 in this diagram, which is for my particular year (1979).

Do you have this link for Real OEM?
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do?vin=&kind=M&arch=0

1978-1984 R65s are in "Archive", while the 1985 on, are in "Current".  Or just enter your 7 digit serial # and it will take you where you need to be.

Yep, mine does the same, I just every couple months drain the drive tube into a graduated jar, and the final drive overflow into the same (just to make sure it adds up to the total, in my case for the Mono, 150ml), and pour it all back into the tube (I use synthetic). It can also flow into the gearbox believe it or not, so if the amounts don't add up, open the box level/fill plug and check for overflow. Mine never seems to migrate more than 50ml to the final.
Eventually when I get my other bike on the road, I will permanently repair the seal, but as I use the bike daily (read 12 months a year), I'll live with it for now, I'm not really lazy!! LOL
