How much oil on a dual brembo disc brake forks?
« on: August 28, 2009, 03:46:50 PM »
Hi there...

My 1985 R65t has dual brembo caliper disc brake front forks but since I dont have the manual, and since I have seen different informations on the web ( 190cc versus 300cc each fork) I would like to know if anyone can help me out on this on.
Is normal hidraulic fluid  ok for it?

Regards,

Sergio

To just replace the fork oil after draining it, you need 190 cc of 7.5 wt fork oil, about the only place you can get this weight oil is at a BMW shop .

If you can't find this weight oil, 10 wt will be adequate, just don't go any heavier than this .

Thanks, bob, it's one more thing on my list of "To Do" :) Quite a lot of work, but it makes part of the learning process.

If it sounds abnormally noisy afterward, you might want to go up another 10-15cc or so - leastways I've found that works nicely in my '82 LS forks, but the pre-1985 R65 forks are different.  Your bike is an '85 (monolever frame, so your forks are of the design that was inherited from the K-bikes and used on all the monolever frame airheads).

RealOEM.com, shows an '85 R65T as a dual shock bike with snowflake rims .

That is odd - I thought that the R65s all switched to the "big" mono frames in the 85 model year. Hmm.

Yes, my R65T has dual rear shocks, so It is the "smaller" frame, right? It has however the dual front disc (brembo).
Is it really 190cc? I realise I have and odd R65, right? Maybe because It was an ex-police force bike...

I don't think there were any options available from the factory, for front forks, there's an remote chance that a  previous owner may have 'improved' the bike with different forks, but that's a long shot  .

Slightly off topic but my '85 R65RT was built in June '85 and is a twin-shock and twin Brembo model. The numbers were checked out on an internet site but I can't remember which. I've put 10w oil in and 190cc in each leg. Glyn.
