VIN Sticker
« on: March 20, 2007, 03:32:12 PM »
Just in from the state mandated emissions test and hit a little snag. Oh the bike passed but the folks there started having fits over the fact that my 25 year old VIN sticker (the only place you'll find the complete 17 digit #) is no longer readable. Ten different guys tried to read it before a supervisor took a glance at me then at the bike and decided it wasn't worth the trouble. I got through this time but now I'm wondering, Is it possible to get a replacement from BMW? Anyone ever experience any of this?

Rich, I had the same problem when I registered my R65 first time in Arizona, at the initial inspection when I got the title transfered from Illinois to Arizona. It took about 2 months of dealing with those brain dead idiots before I got my title and registration.

Yet, the parts fiches show VIN stickers available.
What's to stop anyone from ordering up a few and stamping any #s they want to on them??

Seems like having the title in hand + the original VIN tag would suffice, but it's good to know this; summer's a'comin', and I'd bet lots of folks get their annual inspections done just about now.

Much of mine is not legible either, but Oregon's title for it just shows the 6 (7? I forget.) digit serial number and the "R65", not the long number that is on my VIN tag.  I somehow have neglected to call that to DMV's attention.

Indiana is the same as Oregon, except we don't even have vehicle/emission tests here!  :o

This state is as red as they come.

They don't have them where I live, either.  I think it must just be in the metropolitan areas.  Where, judging from the Willamette Valley smog some days (as I look across from a hill top view) is not a bad idea.

I'm sure Polk County is also red, in spite of me.  Actually I'm purple.

 Yeah, me too!!

We only have the safety inspections here in the 'big city' of Raleigh, at least for motorcycles. Still have the emissions test for the cages.  I'm surprised they even looked at the VIN sticker.  I guess they were trying to verify that you had the same vehicle as your registration?

The sticker on my '81 RT is an absolute mess.  Has anybody looked into scraping off the stcker and using metal stamps to stamp the vin into the frame at the same location?  In TX, if a title is transferred from out of state the VIN has to be verified.  I was lucky and the inspector gave the guy a sheet without looking at bike (highly illegal from a bueracratic standpoint) because of the volume of business he does with them.  The VIN matches that stamped by the headstock but that one is missing like the first two letters/digits/whatever.

The Vin number should also be stamped on the frame. I know that on my 1982 R65 and my 1975 R90 it is on the brace on the RH side by the steering head.

Don, it is quite often incomplete or has extraneous characters (I can't remember which) in front of it so it does not EXACTLY match the VIN as it appears on title.

I hit a snag using the numbers on the headstock as well, fortunately the DMV official took pity when he realized that the VIN was present with all the other numbers.

Well I do have a complete set of stamps, letters & numbers. I'm thinhing of attaching a plate with dome tasteful brass rivets. Is there a blank plate? or do I have to invent one on my father in laws milling machine? Anyone have a Roundel die for stamping?
