Hand Grips
« on: August 15, 2009, 10:29:28 PM »
Finally got to take my 83' R65 for a 60 mile run today through the San Mateo Hills in CA. My right hand was NUMB even with the gel gloves. Can anyone recommend any better than stock grips? Really enjoyed the ride and at 75mph on the highway was surprised at smoothness and sureness of the R65 engin :De!

Thanks!

Josh

What helps me is the ability to "lock" the throttle at a desired spot.  I wouldn't be able to ride if I couldn't do this...

I finally was doing this with my palm. But man were my fingers numb. Gotta be an aftermarket grip that is more padded than stock. Also Justin, do you remember someone built a custom dash on here out of metal? I can't find it on the forum but would love to see again. I have cut a custom oil pressure gauge into my rubber dash but would love to fabricate something else. Here is a pic from my ride today

i'd never had a blister or cramps so bad from a throttle until i got my r65.  the grips have squared edges and the throttle cable seems stiff.

this totally fixed the problem:  http://www.aerostich.com/throttle-boss.html

these work pretty well also:  http://www.aerostich.com/throttle-rocker.html

Josh, are you sure the numbness in your hand is caused by the grip? I have the same problem from time to time and I discovered it was my riding jacket blocking circulation in my right armpit. Sounds a little crazy but it may be worth a check on your end. It only took me about a year and close to 5,000 miles to make the discovery.

Carpal tunnel release surgery fixed it for me, about $1200 a pair.
Not sure it it was 32 years of riding or 32 years of working or just the 48 years.

I have had carpal tunnel in the past. 10 years of laying tile and marble. Resolved itself for the most part when I stopped that job. I am sure it is partly that. Same fingers go numb.

Maybe I'll give these a try.

My fatigue is always in my clutch hand...I hoping to get used to it as it feels like a muscle group I dont use in my normal day

Might some bar end weights reduce the buzz?     Monte

If you can find them the Gran Turismo grips are great - they are air filled and really reduce the vibration transmitted to your hands.
Note that the right side grip is larger in diameter to fit over the twist grip for the throttle.
Just a very satisfied user - I have them on all three airheads.

...and I carved the GT's off both my R65s as I found the larger diameter of the grip to be uncomfortable.

Choices, choices... Grandpa used to say, "Boy, if every man wanted to be married to your grandma, I'd be in a lotta trouble."

Josh, I didn't see a mention of the type of bars you are using.  Are they low bars?  I find that riding with low bars puts a lot of weight on my hands/wrists and causes numbness.  My set up calls for a more upright riding position.

I guess the bars are stock height? The bike is basically new condition after sitting in a collectors garage. Only 13,000 miles.

So the 7/8 Gran Turismo's will fit? There are a bunch on ebay. Cool colors also. End weights seem like a good solution but pricey.

There is another thread on here somewhere concerning the GT air-grips.
I think that they would work well if one has large hands and/or is not able to tightly grasp smaller diameter grips with ones fingers.   IF one has shorter fingers or smaller hands, I think that they might not be very good.

Try a "search" and set for either 1 year or all posts - I think Melena was looking for a place to get these...

Ah, here it is - should give you some more ideas:
