Frustrated no more - mystery solved!
« on: August 09, 2009, 07:13:08 PM »
Lesson learned:
"Never underestimate people's lack of respect for others or their property."

After an uneventful 70 mile ride saturday I decided to start tracing the fuel flow, starting with completely draining the tank. As the tank neared it's final few ounces of gas we noticed a, (GET THIS)  1 inch by 1.5 inch of paper moving around in the last of the gas.   :o

Removed the petcock and was able to grab it with tweezers and pull it through.   Seems some A-hole folded up a cash register receipt and put it in my tank.  see attached photo   >:( >:( >:(

I'm relieved it wasn't something amiss with the bike but my blood still boils thinking of what could have happened if I lost power at the wrong time.

I will be much more religious about locking my filler cap at all times.

Use caution with the flippin' lock on the gas cap. Being vintage, they occasionally refuse to un-lock. Easier to go fishing than see the $150.00+ tab for a BMW new 'un.

Paying at the pump will stop the nonsense.

Monte, I agree with your thoughts on vintage gas caps which is why I usually don't lock it when I'm out riding.

Thinking back, I'm 98% sure that this happened when I rode up to Pt. Reyes Station, CA (a small psuedo-country town in N. Ca.) and parked a block away from a cafe where I stopped in and had a cup.  When I returned to my bike I remember seeing a small group of young adult males standing across the street joking about. I also remember seeing a few of elderly women nearby staring in my direction as I saddled up. I got a weird vibe at the time, like everyone was looking a me because I toilet paper stuck to my shoe.
It was only about 10 miles later that I stated experiencing problems.

The jerky kids evidently have been swimming in the shallow end of their parents gene pool. [smiley=thumbdown.gif] Beyond help. Perhaps Darwin's Theory on fittness for survival will catch up to them.

Looks like we need to add another branch to the troubleshooting tree for fuel problems, drain fuel tank and check to see if some A-hole put something in your fuel tank .

That remind me of a situation that i faced once, when some teens stuck a corncob into the exhaust pipe of my Enfield Bullet 350...and that thing was kick start only ....I figured it out once i saw a bunch of them grinning in the corner.  No cure for stupidity!!!!

Someone once left me a half of a pizza sitting in a box on my gas tank outside of a nice italian restaurant one evening.   Fortunately they didn't try to cram it into any orifice on my bike - I crammed it into my mouth later that evening. ;D

Reminds me of a period piece motorcycle movie where the protagonist kept some other stuff in the gas tank. In the past I found the yellow  vent cap from a plastic gas can floating around in there. 'Whots' in your tank?
