Only starts on one cylinder
« on: March 21, 2007, 08:33:48 AM »
Hello Everyone, I have just recently purchased a 1983 R65 as my first bike.  I am a 19 year old college student and have been performing all of the maintenance myself.  So far it has been a relatively trouble free bike except for a little issue I have now.  I decided to take the bike out for the first time this winter and go for a quick ride and I noticed that when it starts it will only run off the right cylinder.  It will run of this cylinder for about 30 seconds until the other one catches on.  This problem really only occurs when the bike is cold.  Any help?

Did you get any maintenance records from the previous owner? There's a number of things that could be going on here, and it'd help to know what's been done, and when.

almost certainly a jet issue. ;) pilot jet would be my guess, fire some carb cleaner through and see if things improve.

I take it you have checked for a spark at the plug? if checking for spark make sure plug is earthed to cylinder

The bike only had one previous owner who managed to put 93,000 miles on it.  The engine along with the transmission was rebuilt at 70,000 miles.  I bought the bike after it had been sitting in his garage for over 10 years.  They work I had to perform to get it back into ride able shape was rebuild the carburetors, replace all fluids, new spark plug, replace all gaskets in the engine to stop any and all leaks, and new tires.  It could very well be the jets, ill have to look into that.

Before you get too involved , check the adjustment of the 'choke' cables. There is a 'splitter' under the tank where the cable from the handlebar goes into the housing, and two cables come out and go to the carburetors. Not hard at all to dislodge one of the cables from the block of plastic that it sits in, and cause a cable not to move enough. Do you keep the bike on the center stand or the side stand? If you keep it on the side stand, it will act up on starting just as you have mentioned. There's also the possibility that you still have the original gray 'crack-o-matic' ignition coil, a weak coil will add to your starting problems.
