Rear Drum brake spindle O rings
« on: July 25, 2009, 01:48:35 PM »
While I had the rear wheel off recently for a new tire, I took the trouble to remove the brake shoes and operating cam for a general clean and re-lube.

I noticed there were no O rings on the cam spindle and when cleaned it was a fairly loose fit in the rear drive casting. The spindle had 4 grooves but they were much too shallow to fit O rings.

Anyone know if this is normal for a 79 model ?

RealOEM parts catalog, shows at least one o-ring on the brake cam, regardless of what year the bike is .

Hey, Barry... Was there an oil drip/leak from the brake shaft? There ought to be at least one rubber ring in there.

I have heard of bikes with anywhere from two to four o-rings. Some owners may have machined additional o-ring grooves for 'insurance'.

No leaks Monte. I was just curious and I thought I had read that there should be O rings also the Haynes manual said there should be one.

Just found this on Snowbums site :-

"Prior to 1980, most did not have any O-rings, you simply cleaned the shaft, greased it, and there was a felt just inside the right side actuating lever, at the spline end"

I have the felt so looks like mine never had any.

Thanks for the replies guys

Sometimes, a couple of us hereabouts, might kinda rag on the Snowbum. He can get kinda wordy but give credit where it's due. He does exhibit a vast knowledge of BMWs. Tip o' the hat, Barry.    Monte
