Final Drive Seal

It's about time to replace brake shoes and brake shaft seals on the '81 R65. The parts are on the bench but I'm also considering replacing the seal shown in the photo as I suspect it's allowing a bit of gear lube to seep past.

Looking for tips on removal and replacement. Want to avoid damaging the seal -duh!- as it goes over (?) the drive gear. Or is there additional disassembly required for the seal R&R?

The usual method that I've seen, is to remove the final drive cover .

Then remove and replace the seal, then reinstall the cover .

You'll also need to replace the paper gasket that goes between the cover and the housing .

Do you have any aluminum 'speed tape' handy, I think I would put some on the final drive splines to protect the seal from damage during reinstallation .

While you're at it, replace the o-rings on the rear brake cam that goes through the final drive, another source of gear oil leakage .

He's still day dreaming about all of those 125cc Chinese bikes buzzing around Cozumel and wishing he was there with his R65 so he could blow their wheels off.

Yep, the Chinese look-a-likes were all over Cozumel. Also saw every Japanese brand represented but not a single Euro bike. A family of FOUR zipped past us on a step-thru 100cc scooter... two adults and two little bitty ones. Scary. We wuz walking since I was wearing my beer goggles.

The scooter rental places, with one on almost every block, ask that you be sober when you rent the bike. Coming back... quien sabe?

Oh, yeah... thanks for the maintenance tips. Got the O-rings for the brake shaft plus the shoes on the bench. Also plenty go-fast tape. Y'all know the saying, "If you can't fix it, duck it." Best score that big paper gasket now.
