1979 R65 Idiot lights
« on: May 29, 2009, 02:31:25 AM »
What are the idiot lights on a tacho and binacle.

I have long since removed mine.

Tacho:
Oil Pressure.
Charging circuit.
Neutral.
High beam.

Binnacle:
Indicators.

Was there anything else?

Was it not the same for post 81 twin shock bikes as well?

More to the point has anyone have a small orange light on the far right of the tacho near the max rev marks.

Over-rev?

Anyone shed some light?

The small LED in the tachometer, is an over-rev indication .

The only difference in the '81 and beyond, is the absence of the over-rev indication .

I need to ask, what is a binnacle, a word I've never heard of before .

Its the bit that surrounds the Instruments - Its a Limey term.  Instrument cover?  Black rubbery plastic thing that always breaks on the bottom corners.

It stems back to a nautical term - a box (sometimes on a stand) where a ships compass and light switches etc, can be found.

So I should have had one on my 1979 R65 tacho?

Oops.  I did not know that.

Or forgotten all about it.  Must check my old tacko at home, if I can find it. (i.e. its not on the bike!)

Alright, I learned something today, I think I'll take the rest of the day off !!!

I guess when the electric signal from the ignition system reached a certain point, the LED illuminated, probably a transistor switch on the printed circuit board inside the tachometer .

Also, I think the '79 speedo had the odometer reset on the back like the bigger bikes with the "push-button" coming into being in 1980...

I would think that another word for the instrument "surround" would possibly be bezel...

The speedometer that I have still has the reset on the forward side of the indicator, not on the glass lens .

My bike was the 9th off of the production line for US market bikes for the '81 model year, so I got the 'left overs' from the previous years parts run .

This would be the "bottom" of the unit, if the "top" is the glass.
Sitting at the angle they do, it is also more "forward" than the rest of the unit.

This is what one looks like after you plow a field with it....

These bikes look so sad with their little feet in the air.  It makes me want to help it.

...apparently it made somebody want to photograph it first!   ;D
