Paint Colour

The BMW original paint code for my '79 R65 is 551 (Red).  Can anyone tell me if any of the major paint manufacturers in North America will have the equivalent colour or if you know what the equivalent (Ford/GM/Chrysler/why) colour might be?

I have a collector plate for this bike and to keep the plate I need to paint it the original colour when I repaint it.  I'm guessing the present paint job is not close to original...the top of the tank, fenders etc is a dark cherry and the sides are a red.

Glasurit is/was the OEM for these and if you have a DuPont paint jobber the BMW code can be directly crossed in their "European" Spies Hecker line.

Thanks for the tip Justin.  I plan to paint the bike myself.  There is a retail outlet in town and I'm not sure they can help so I've emailed Dupont customer service.  We'll see if I get a response.

If you give DuPont the BMW paint code they should be able to give you the Spies Hecker code for a perfect match!  I usually take in a piece that is the correct color and the jobber put's the camera/computer to it and it spits out a mix.  But, if you don't have any of the original color left that wouldn't be an option...

For my 1983 R65 with paint code #501 -a metallic blue- I haunted the car lots looking for a close to perfect match. The Glasurit paint is way expensive and my paint jobber, a DuPont outlet, couldn't get a mix code for the 501. Go figure. 2010 Honda Insight Pure Sky Blue Metallic it is.

Wife Lynn started this whole repaint deal when she spotted an F650 at LoneStar BMW in Austin, Texas. "Let's paint my R65 in that color."

Mike... Are you paying attention?  :D

The BMW codes will not cross over to ANY DuPont mix, you have to get it matched through their Spies Hecker line.  DuPont Hot Hues "Blue Mood" is very close to the blue on R65s but more vibrant.  Look at the '84 in my albumn in the gellery and that is Blue Mood.

Huh?  Are you talking to me?  Not to worry because Feyonce' rides her very own R1100R in your basic black.  She doesn't even want to accessorize it with farkles.

Not going concourse here; just working within the pre-FAA Civil Aeronautics Administration TLAR construction and repair standards.

Dupont Customer Service wasn't too helpful so I've sent and email to the Canadian rep.  We'll see where that goes.
