Fun topic...who has the seat circlip still?
« on: May 10, 2009, 10:47:53 AM »
Just wondering if you have been able to keep that circlip on that holds the seat from sliding back. I don't think it is very important and I like to be able to move the seat quickly out of the way when I take the gastank off or remove the battery. Just a' wondering!? I used to replace it religiously but not anymore. I do have one for "concours" days!

Between my two R65s, I have a total of two seat circlips. I'm using a thin washer and an E-clip on the other two hinge points.   Monte

Motobins has the seat circlip for $0.38/USD plus Royal Air Mail charges. I haven't shopped them "local".

I've got one left, I use a washer, and safety wire twisted into the groove where the circlip goes.

I've replaced two of them on my R90/6 but the little rascals keep disappearing.  After that experience I don't even worry about it for my R65.  The way the seat hooks over the sub frame I'm pretty sure that it isn't going to come off.

I have all intact, they are cheap enough from Chi BMW.  I ran the "E" clips once but I would rather have a root canal than put another one of them on.  At least the "correct" clips have something to hang onto.

Open seat. Place tongue in left corner of mouth. Bite down on the R65.org flashlight. Hang across the tail piece. Grip E-clip with needlenose pliers and pray. Have ample supply of E-clips on hand.

I like Bengt's safety wire idea more and more.  ;)

Mine has no circlips but I've never had a problem with the seat falling off. More of a problem getting the seat off the bike which seems to require a rather prolongued session trying to heave the seat of the prongs.

I reckon the circlips are just extra weight.

It is pretty hard to wrestle the seat out of place on my '79 once the clips have been removed.
I think you will be alright without them!

If anyone wants one, I have a brand new spare - I over ordered last time, it seems.

When I bought my R65, it had no E-clips. At first I thought "no big deal." Then I noticed that the seat tends to slide forward against the rear of the tank. My bike has some narrow horizontal bare spots on the rear of the tank where the forward edge of the seat had worn away the paint over the years. So I decided that it would be prudent to combine authenticity with longevity and spend 50 cents US and about 1/2 day of cursing in my garage to put the clips where they should be, in order to preserve my tank.

Lost mine about 20 years ago. Pin is now drilled and I use a washer and 'R' clip. Very easy to put on and off!

Cheers Bruce

Some good solutions here! Maybe I should try again. I have a sneaking suspicion that the seat would be just as or more forward with the circlip in place and it keeps the seat from moving back...doesn't it?
Also, Justin, I tried those E-clips too and gave up. Doesn't any other company ever use the circlips like ours with that flange for ease of removal?

Bruce, good idea.

Sue, I never was able to get an "E" clip on the front pivot.  >:(  As far as a "third-party" solution for these clips I can't say that I had ever seen any like these before so they are likely an application specific part.
