swingarm socket best buy
« on: May 05, 2009, 09:44:34 AM »
Any experiences with the quality and best price+shipping of the 27mm swingarm sockets offered by Joe's, N'woods, SanJose BMW, MotoBins?

I'm in the market to buy. Most prices are pretty close but quality is unknown. Thoughts?  Thanks, Monte

Monte,

A Craftsman 27mm deep socket most likely will work, if it's a tight fit, take the grinder to it, and also grind down the rounded end as the nut is thin, and you won't have full engagement of the socket on the nut .

$8.49 at Sears online, store is probably a bit more.

I bought mine from Joe's some time ago - didn't have a working bench grinder at the time.   It fits well and the one I got was a 6 point socket - it will never break or slip but some prefer the 12 point sockets.

Senor Monte, I just took delivery on one from Joe's.  It's a good tool at a reasonable price.  You should ride south sometime and I'll show you.  Unless you want to meet at Sweety Pie's Ribeye's in Decatur.

Whilst poking about in the tool chests, I came across a thin wall, 6-pt, 22mm metric socket. An AutoZone Duralast. Hum? I wonder...

Drove over to the store and, sure enough, they had a 27mm with the same construction. $6.99 plus tax.

Popped off the swingarm nut cover and... it fits! Still need to dress the face for maximum purchase on the nut. Lucky find as all the vendors were in the $14.00 or so price range plus about a third more of that for shipping.

Good on ya, Mate!  Are you lubing the splines?  What's the plan?

No plans as yet. Just wanted to add a useful BMW tool to my toy box.

Tools!  What red blooded man could live without them?  Why just yesterday I took delivery of a Fugowie war club from San Jose Beemers.

My socket from Joe's Tools is a Duralloy so I guess I could have gone to Auto Zone too, but I doubt they would have had the special little socket/wrench combo for draining the fork oil that I also ordered.

Ooo! I saw that little jewel. A future must have here, too.  ;)

The Fugowie war club is as handy as, well... as long as you're not starting out with already "scalped" threads. I have a corner of my old workbench that I use as a stress reliever. I occasionally beat the crap out of it when evil things get me cranked. Hello, Fugowie war club.  [smiley=chairshot.gif]

There's a nice dent in the steel garage door that is a daily reminder to me. Do not throw the cordless telephone when angry with an ex-wife.
