LS Fairing and Dash Panel
« on: June 06, 2008, 11:46:08 PM »
Hi All,

I am looking to buy a new LS fairing and instrument pod - hopefully taking advantage of the strong Australian Dollar. Can some wise R65er please tell me the difference between the two dash panels in the parts fiche?  At Hammersley BMW 46-63-1-242-385 is $63.87 and 46-63-2-301-759 is $73.45. Is there a significant difference in the two? No parts fiche I look at makes a clear distinction between the two.  Both dash panels I have are cracked at the mounting points so a new one would be great.

Best wishes to all,
Paul,
Sydney, Australia

Howdy, Paul.  Welcome to the R65 ranch, bar and grille.

Sometimes, BMW will decide to change a part number for no apparent reason. Probably some minor change change in the "widget" washer attach method, or something similar.

I like the A&S BMW parts fiche.  http://www.ascycles.com/Illustrated_catalog/R65(78-85)/catalog_frameset.html The pages can be enlarged for easier viewing and less strain on my old eyes.

As to pricing differences, it's the same in any retail situation; Sellers can charge what they think their product is worth and/or what the market will bear. Caveat emptor.

I just recently tossed the pod and pad from my 1981 R65 along with removing all the steam instruments. Going digital up front. The original stuff was pretty tatty looking.

Paul,
46-63-1-242-385 is the standard upper instrument cover. 46-63-2-301-759 is the same part but meant for the optional clock mounting, this according to Real OEM. I've not seen an LS with the clock so can only guess as to what it actually looks like. Anyone have an LS w/clock?

The "MAXBMW" site shows both panels in their R65LS parts fiche.  The cowl with BMW part number 46-63-1-242-385 is without the clock.  If you order the other cowl (as I did from Bob's BMW...they exchanged it BTW) you'll get one with a 4 sq. in. hole near the bottom.  Bob's told me that the digital clock is still available for $280 (could be cool at a bike show).  Both panles are around $80-90 US.

Hi All,

I ended up getting the cowl without the clock fitting and it is now on the bike. In fact I replaced the fairing/instrument mounting bracket and now my fairing doesn't move at all. The old one had broken blinker mounts which meant the fairing moved up and down.

Best to all,
Paul
