clutch question
« on: March 29, 2009, 11:24:55 PM »
I am working on a '80 R65.  I'm sending the tranny off to get rebuilt and I was contemplating sending the clutch assembly to Southland Clutch to get it freshened up.  They did a great job on my wife's '82 R100.  It now shifts like a Honda.  The clutch I'm looking at on the bike looks like the one that's on an R90/6.  It's not the one that's on the '82.  The microfisch on the A & S BMW site shows the R90 type clutch for all years.  Is this the case?  Did the R65's continue with the older clutch set up?  Thanks.

The '80 and '81 models use the "heavy" flywheel and different transmission as did the bigger bikes.  Although the flywheel and clutch components are different the same type of differences exist.  I'm not really sure that made any sense but I think I'm too sleepy to attempt to "improve" it...

I think that Justin meant "79-80" bikes used the same (heavy flywheel) clutch design that the other contemporary bikes R80, R100T, R100RT) did.
In 1981 they all switched to the lighter "carrier" assembly clutch system.

I had my clutch relined, and pressure plates 'trued up' two years ago, by Southland Clutch in National City, CA..

The materials and workmanship on the clutch, were top notch.

The machining job on the pressure plates was a disaster to say the least bit.

The plates were machined at an angle as viewed from the edge, and the the faces of the plates were machined with a taper, the outer edge was the highest, and the inner edge was .010 in. lower.

I only had at best 3/16 ths in. contact between the clutch disc and the pressure plates, at the outer edge, when I removed the clutch after 3 miles, the pressure plates were blue in the contact area.

I also had problems with the transmission, if you use Motorwerks in National City, CA .

They incorrectly installed the input shaft seal, and the shift shaft seal, causing shifting problems.

All in all both of these shops caused about 40 hours of unnecessary work on my bike.

When it was all done and said, I replaced all of the rebuilt parts for OEM BMW parts on the clutch and pressure plates for about $140 more than the rebuild cost.

If you would like to read these entire series of events, on page 30 in this section, under the heading of 'Transmission Problems', there are 4 pages of posts .

After installing the 'rebuilt' parts, there is a good chance you won't be able to get the correct clutch adjustment on the adjuster bolt at the rear of the transmission.

Most likely you will need to get a bolt about 5 threads, or so longer than the OEM adjuster bolt.
