1986 R65 ignition coils
« on: March 05, 2009, 05:42:03 AM »
I noticed a high voltage arcing sound from the ignition coil area. Could be the older wires arcing or the coils I thought. While looking further I then noticed cracks several inches long in the gray ignition coils. Are there good aftermarket replacements like Dyna etc? If so where? I have searched but had no luck finding any. If there are no good aftermarket replacements are there any suppliers that have lower cost OEM parts. Thanks

Welcome aboard !!

Dyna has a replacement coil for our bikes, it's commonly referred to as the 'brown' coil, for the bikes equipped with electronic ignition.

Can't tell from your profile where you reside, but Motorrad Eletrik has the them for $90 plus $6 shipping, if you live in North America.

It also includes an aluminum adapter bracket, it's a plug and play item, 15-20 minute install time.

Lots of non-OEM options. This is from the Omega Ignition web site:
http://www.stephenbottcher.net/~omega/faq.html

/5 /6 /7 R90S R45 R65 until 1981 - 2 x old style single coil (rated 6V@1.2Ohm wired in series) or dual coils such as Honda Goldwing, Dyna green/brown/grey

R45-R100R from 1981 on - 2 x new style single coils (rated 6V@0.6Ohm wired in series) and BMW 2V stock dual coil (rated 12V@0.6Ohm) or dual coils such as BMW 4V Dual, Dyna Blue, Andrews 6377B

The older points only ignition required the higher ohm cois - the 1981+ electronics can handle the lower resistance coils but will also work with the higher resistance coil.

Personally I'm carrying an old Goldwing dual coil as a universal replacement. Picked up two used ones from ebay.

That's exactly what I needed. Will probably get the coil at motoelekt.com. It's also good to know the Gold Wing coils will work as well. Thanks for the answers.

Welcome aboard, and post pictures when you can.  Always good to hear of another 'Mono" on the road.  Where are you located?

Here's the Dyna on my 1981 R65. A great replacement for the OEM Crack-O-Matic.  [smiley=thumbup.gif] for Rick and Motorad Elektrik.

My '83 R65 is next in line for a Dyna as it currently has twin Bosch coils and me no likey.    Monte
