New member in Austin
« on: October 24, 2026, 12:28:23 PM »
Hello all,
New member here from Round Rock, Texas, just outside of Austin. Long retired, 70-something, and with way too much time on my hands. I'm fighting boredom and feeling the urge to return to riding. It's been about 15 years since my last bike. I was recently reassured that it's, "just like riding a bike." Ten years ago I was so sure I would never ride again that I traded my truck in for a CRV (Austin traffic.) I've just had a hitch installed on the CRV, and I think I'll be ok hauling a bike on a small U-Haul bike trailer. I'm working on buying a not-so-local 1980 R65. Not nuts about the Pichler fairing, and will want to take that off and source parts to return it to a naked bike. Not sure what all that will entail, but I guess I'll find out.
Other than occasionally riding friends' bikes in the past, I'm new to BMW's, and looking forward to getting back on the road. (Although I admit I'm looking around town for a big empty parking lot to practice in.) Thanks for the add.

Tom

The R65 is a good bike. A little different from the other airheads. Unique styling. Technology and design language are the same as the other models of its era but fewer of the parts are interchangeable compared to other models. It was never as popular as the other models. Being the smallest of the lineup left a stigma. But a 650 is a full-sized bike. The R65 has ample power for practical purposes but not enough for thrills unless you really wind it out. The engine is highly over-square, meaning that it CAN be revved higher and MUST be revved higher to access its 45-ish horsepower. Which I rarely bother with.
