Hey Rob! pics of R45 single seat
« on: January 28, 2009, 03:21:15 PM »
yeah, I know, I'm a slacker.  I promised these almost two weeks ago, but it's kinda hard to get motivated when its overcast and 15F out........

seat when secure, you have to remove the pannier to access the key hole:

underside of seat.  rear attach point looks stock, front one doesn't, and again, gotta remove the other pannier to open it this far:

close-up of front attach point:

outside shot:

and some other close ups:

the dash.  Yup, have flashers.  The silver circle thing on the bottom is for a clock.  Battery died and I haven't yet replaced it.  The speedo is in Km, and you have to turn the key all the way to the right to turn on the lights.  Or you can run around with the lights off.  Best remember to put the stand up before you drive off too, because it won't kill the engine if you drop it into gear with it down.

The radio box.  Looks cool, but not a whole lot of room inside, and the locking tab sticks out and nabs my hand almost every time I reach in there:

close up of the wind screen.  Very retro and slightly archaic looking compared to the new stuff.  hehehe

If you haven't said it before tell us about the mounts for those aux. driving lights! They look cool!

Thank you, Dee!

Don't worry about procrastination.  If I could figure out a way to make money off of it, I would be a rich man! lol!

I don't suppose I could trouble you to email me the high-res versions?

That front seat hinge mount looks like it is a modified front sub-frame bolt...
I'm not sure I like that, considering how much stress in on that fastener.

The rear mount looks stock, as you say, but I think it is further forward than the two-seaters.

Here is a picture that shows the location of my rear seat hinge mount:

And sorry about that locking tab and your hand.  Ouch!

I have to wait for the spouse to bring home the high speed aircard.  We're out in the sticks and I'm currently blazing away at 24.0 Kbps on dialup.   ;D

Your setup does look a bit different than mine.  I will try and get a better pic of the back attach point.

And the tab 'jabs' are nothing compared to what I did last night.  I love baking bread, and I was cutting up some slices of a nice sourdough seeded bread for todays lunch and I slipped and tried to slice off part of my left index finger.  Freshly sharpened 9" long serrated bread knife.  Pleasant visit to the ER and 8 stiches later........  Dee and knives don't mix well.   ::)

OUCH! Dee!  :o

Don't worry on getting those pictures out!

Fresh baked bread... you are one of the good ones, aren't you!  :)

And I will have to go out to the garage to be sure, but I think your rear hinge may pivot on the pivot for the front hinge on the two-seater.

And if you haven't already been told, you may want to use a zip-tie to secure your sidecovers.  They have a tendancy to fall off.

It is tedious work, but around the frame and out through the slots in the sidecover.  Some folks have figured out how to have the zip-ties' "joint" in the back, but I haven't.  It is small, and black, so I don't worry about it.

Here is a picture I found on my hard drive.  It appears to confirm my suspicions that your bike is using the front dual seat hinge pin for your rear.  This leaves me with a new possibility!  A hinged seat!  Finding one of those front hinges will be another thing.

That finger cut sounds nasty!! But the bread was great and at least made you feel better, I hope. I have been paying some attention to this single seat thread...I like the look.

Here is a picture of my subframe before I mounted it.  I just found it on my computer.
It shows the tabs fairly well.

With the proper hinges, you may not need tabs welded on.

click for large

With the generation change in '80/'81, ther wew a few subtle changes made to the subframe.  One of them is the type of fastener used to fasten the top front mounts that fasten to the main frame.  In the early years, it was a standard flat-head, hex bolt from the inside - with a nut and lock washer on the outside.  Maybe a flat washer, too.

In '81, that was changed to a recessed hole in the subframe to accept a conical-head, Allen type bolt from the inside, with the std. nut, etc on the outside.

The two subframes are interchangable, as long as you have the correct fastener.  The tool trays are different as well.  The early ones have recesses for the bolt heads sticking in.   (These also get in the way on battery removal...)

RealOEM for the solo seat stuff.  It shows a hinge!  So does Chicago BMW!  So I ordered one!  We'll see what happens.  $26.73 US inc. shipping...

I didn't see anybody else address Sue's question, but to me those look like one of the accessory kits that was available (maybe still is) from the dealer.  My ETK shows something that looks like them.

I've been slacking on getting a better look at the mounts.  I leave for work and its dark, I get home and its dark and its about 20 below down in the shop......yeah, I know, excuses.....

My four day weekend is coming up, and I have no plans except to clean house and sew and plan out the garden and clean up the greenhouse...hehehe   I PROMISE I will get some info for you, Sue.

As far as I know, the lights came in a set put together by Bosch.

Wait Wait!!!!!  I just reached into the file cabinet sitting next to me.  I found a copy of a Max BMW fiche file.

I was sure this was down in the shop in the paperwork 'bucket' for the bike.  Hope this link works......

My seat with the rack is currently only $271.00 US (excluding VAT for Europeans) from S. Meyer, and it is plenty comfy!  I love it!
