Bike won't shift...
« on: June 03, 2022, 05:26:55 AM »
Hello folks, I have been waiting to ride my new resident 1980 R65 with less than 10,000 miles on it. It was a beautiful day. I started the bike which needs a bit of adjustment as it won't stay running. I was annoyed but figured a 30 minute rip would clean out the webs. I went to put in gear and it won't engage at all. The bike has been sitting for awhile but was serviced by Max BMW in CT. before I bought it.. I removed a Vetter fairing the PO had put on it, got all the bits and pieces, bucket, new winkers up front as well as a new bucket holder, did some wiring and I was ready. I have searched the forum and will make some clutch adjustments to see if that helps but would that really make a difference? I am new to BMW's having Honda Goldwing GL1000's forever so I know nothing about these. I just wanted a simple machine to be-bop around town. Any suggestions? I figure start with the simple things first and hope for the best. My day was not ruined as I took out my new Resto Mod GL1000 and had a blast...I will be focusing on this now. Thanks in advance!

Does the clutch arm at the back of the transmission move when the clutch lever is moved ??
If the bike has been dormant for an extended period of time, the clutch disc and the pressure plates may be rusted together  .
Try rotating the rear wheel and use your hand to move the shift lever . I just saw your profile, you're on the coast of New England, so damp conditions are most likely the cause .

Riding all year long since 1993 .
I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

Well, I thank you for that suggestion. It worked! Your right about the conditions here. I have a fan and 2 dehumidifiers in a heated garage to fight Mother Nature. I'll be taking it out when the sun shines here of course the morning marine layer needs to burn off first. I'll need to search for carb adjustments next. Thanks again.
