R65 mirrors
« on: February 26, 2022, 08:15:16 AM »
The mirrors on my r65 were in pretty poor shape . The right hand stalk/stem was completely devoid of chrome and had been hand painted in silver by a previous owner . The left hand one was a bit better but not by much . I was very reluctant to spend £60 plus delivery on a pair on unremarkable BMW ones so decided to try something else . I found a pair of all metal , nicely chromed ones with slightly convex glass on eBay for £16.99 delivered . These had the appropriate M8 thread . When they arrived the LH one fitted fine but as the RH mounting is deeper the thread was not long enough. After some pondering I purchased  some stainless M8 stud connectors , machined them to suit , cut down the thread on the mirrors , used stud lock to fit into the "adapters " and used a suitable length M8 bolt to fit to the bike . I think they look OK - certainly not that much different to BMW ones - and a lot cheaper . I fitted on both sides to match ( bit OCD )

Nicely done.

Is it just the angle of the photo because it looks bloody huge?

Just the camera in wide angle - mirror head is same size as BMW one . Mirror stem is the same length as the BMW one for "high bars " so shorter than my OEM ones but as the mirror is slightly convex the view behind is very good ( no elbows )
