What's the most fuel you've ever put in your tank?

I went on a 450ish mile round trip from Austin to Corpus Christi on 7/26 - 7/27.  I don't care for sustained interstate freeway riding on my R65, so I took a route through some smaller towns on state highways.  The gas stations get few and far between in the middle of the route.  I was running sustained speeds around 80-90 mph, when I hit reserve I thought I had a bit more range than I actually did!

4.9 US gallons, my first week in the Phoenix area  October, 1993 and unfamiliar with the fuel stations, got out of the metropolitan area and quickly found out the scarcity of stations in this region .
Before 10% ethanol was added to the fuel supply and 55 mph highway speed limits, I could easily go 250 miles to reserve on rural roads .
Now with the ethanol added and 65-75 mph highway speed limits, 190-195 miles is the best I can do .
This is with top end done, new piston rings installed and rebuilt carbs, the '81 R65 now has 92,000 miles on it now .

What is the capacity of the GSA fuel tank, my '02 R1150R will only take a bit over 4 US gallons when the low fuel light comes on '??

The cost of Unleaded 91 is around AUD1.60/1.70 per litre in Brisbane.  It can go down to 1.40 sometimes and is generally up and down like a yo-yo.  For 95 and 98 that can be up to another 30/40-ish cents.

In my R65, the most fuel I put in the tank was ... 22 liter. I ran dry on the Autoroute A10 near Saint Chelly D'apcher, at 3 am .... Needless to say the missus was quite unhappy...
I've found on this occasion that Mr BMW measuring was right. They said 22 l and it was 22 l. You have to know that in France and on high speed motorways, gas stations are at least 50 km apart. On this particular region, there where a merge between two companies of motorways. So each of them put the first station 50 km from the limit. Making 100 km between them. And with the RT fairing, riding 2 and the Krauser luggage plus a big bag on the rear, at 130 km/h, I could not make 100 km on reserve....
Since then, I fill her as soon as the reserve come into play.
Here in France, gas is at around 1€50 for 95 E10 (10% Ethanol) per liter, 1€60~65 for 95 E5 (5% ethanol) and around 1€70 for 5% Ethanol 98 octane.

FYI, the Pacific Peso (Australian $) is worth around 0.70c US. A US gallon is 3.8 liters. So at A$ 1.70/liter is equal to US $4.52 per US Gallon.

I got 198 miles on my last tank of unleaded regular. I added 4.5 gallons to fill it to the top! This is on my 1983 stock standard r 65 LS with a windscreen.

There is some unusable fuel on the right side of the fuel tank .
Get the fuel tank loose so you can lift up the front of the tank, then turn it to the left, lift the back of the tank so the fuel goes to the front, then reinstall it .
I measured this fuel quantity once and it was a little over a quart, about a liter .

Bob, the price is currently hovering around $1.40 per litre with excursions of 10-15 cents either way.


The GSA tank holds around 34lt and due to hamfistedness on my part when I changed the filter the low fuel light comes on after 28Lt has been used. I usually travel 60 - 100km after it comes on which means a usual fill is between 30 and 31lt.

The most expensive fuel I have ever bought was at Bamaga during our Cape York adventure - $2.41 a litre.
