Electrics
« on: May 21, 2021, 12:06:15 PM »
Afternoon all,

Grateful for some electrical help-i'm very much a novice on the subject! I've bought some after market indicators which I've since installed on my 1980 r65, photo attached.

I thought it should be an easy straight swap-red wire (from indicator) goes into blue/black or blue/red (positive), black (from indicator) joins up with brown (negative) , yellow (running lights) are not needed so not connected. They're not LEDs so I haven't changed the relay. However when I turn on I get nothing from either indicator. Electricity is flowing (so I assume fuses haven't blown) as the bike starts and the headlight works, although (may not be relevant) but the horn doesn't work either. All was working before I changed them (albeit a year or so ago).

Grateful for any help you can give!

Ricky

So you replaced the horn ?
What type did you put on, an air horn by chance ??

?? Not sure I follow... Same horn as before (mounted on frame behind forks). I wasn't sure if it was related as part of the same circuit.

OK, I took it as you replaced the horn .
Check the bulb sockets for power when you have the turn directional switch selected to left or right .

Thanks Bob, will check that.

Stumbled across this thread https://forums.bmwmoa.org/showthread.php?90345-1984-R65-Turn-signal-switch-and-horn-not-working/page2 and now wondering if it's linked to the fact the front brake is currently off the bike (I'm refurbishing the master cylinder and rehosing the brake). I will reconnect the electrics to the y splitter tomorrow morning and see if that makes any difference! Every day's a school day......

I was looking at a wiring diagram and saw that the turn directional and horn go through a connector on the right side of the frame under the fuel tank .
May want to check to see if it's connected and fully seated .

Okay I am assuming a 1980 is a first Generation with the 2 ignition coils (both generation are basically wired the same they just look different)
First the  high and low beam headlights and ignition aren't fused so they are not relevant

Coincidentally
the Horn
The directional signal
 the brake lights
are fused all together on the same fuse
So If the brake lights are  out also
Chances are the following
The fuse is blown or the connection on the back of the fuse is pulled off
The fuse isn't making good continuity in the holder
The wire from the fuse to the directional flasher is bad
The wire from  connector #19 to the fuse holder  is bad
This can all be checked very quickly with a volt meter
No guessing required  ;)

Off course   this  theory doesn't mater  if a Previous owner has changed things

Evening all and thanks for the replies so far.

So I've (somehow) managed to get the horn working now. Indicators still aren't flashing (I've checked all four direct to a battery and they all work) but the indicator relay is at least making a clicking noise (probably double speed to normal) when the turn switch is activated (no noise when cancelled which is good). I had removed the dash indicator warning lights however have reattached these to make sure it wasn't causing the issue-hasn't fixed it. Brake light also is lit when the running light cable is connected to the grey/black cable (if relevant). FYI indicators are not LEDs, they're standard bulbs. I've done a resistance check using the multimeter on the indicator sets themselves and as expected, all working fine (same result as when using the battery) so my assumption is that the issue is somewhere within the wiring? Any guidance on how to use the multimeter to check current is flowing to the bulb? I'm learning as I go.

Thanks again, slowly getting there.

Ricky

The older style flasher delays were very load sensitive. I would suggest buying a cheapish 3 pin flasher relay and trying that

Turn the directional signal on and probe the wires where they connect to the indicator
red lead on one and black lead on the other
voltage will show a negative if you have the probes backwards

Did  you do the checks I listed above
