Dent in left headlight ear
« on: December 29, 2008, 06:17:41 PM »
Hi..

I am in the process of renewing a few parts on my 86 R65 (mono). I ordered a couple of new headlight ears from Max's and finally got down to it.. I have my whole front end off for painting, cleaning and changing out parts. My question is this.. how important is that dent on the inside left headlight "ear"? Is it required for my application? (I hope not!!)

If anyone has a r65-monoshock kicking around, would you mind checking it out for me? Cheers!!

Gary

Here is a pic showing the two ears.. non dented and dented.. yes, they both have signal wire holes, and they are the same size please excuse the trick photography.   ;)

I just found this pic..it might be for the speedo cable..

and a couple of progress shots for fun:

Yeah, Gary.  The dent allows the speedo cable to route by.  The brake hose goes near it as well.   Does it need it????   I think you could get away without it, but why?  The right one has that hole to route a wire (thru a grommet) into the right bottom of the headlight.

Be glad to take pictures of mine, if you need them.

Good luck,

Ed

I think the "why" is because I have the part now.. Being in Canada.. I don't think I can return/exchange it without  significant costs..

I was out in the garage and I think the main reason for the dent is for the steering lock.. i think I am going to install it anyway and see what happens... if it is in the way, I might hit it with a ball pean hammer!!  >:(

Thanks for the reply

Yeah,  The parts fiche doesn't show a very good view.  Though the two parts do have different part numbers.

Do you research part numbers on realoem.com  ??

If not, give it a try.  The first page has a "Click here to enter".  Then just use the last seven digits of your VIN code to bring up your parts pages.

Just a follow up to my dent/no dent headlight bracket.

The word is that the part was manufactured incorrectly without the dent in Germany. No word if they are going to re-manufacture the part with a dent.

Exciting stuff.. I know. At least I know I did not order the wrong part and I can continue my build and more importantly, sleep at night.
