What's the size of the R65 stator?
« on: January 07, 2009, 04:23:08 PM »
The order form for the EnduraLast upgrade to 400 watts for BMW airheads has a choice of either a 107mm stator or an 105mm stator size. Which one do I order for the 1983 R65LS??? I have decided to order and try the EnduraLast because of it's brushless design and the fact that the reftifier is mounted away from the heat of the engine. All other features are sorta equal to me. EnduraLast is cheaper however.

I have a stator hanging out in the air on the front of my replacement engine.

I will measure it when I get home, tonight.

I assume you are talking about the outer-most diameter of the coils.

Acording to the website any airhead newer than 1977 takes the 107 mm stator - I think that is the size I bought for my 1984 model. I am VERY happy with the unit - takes care of heated gear and driving lights as well even through town at lower speeds.

Mounting the combination rectifier/voltage regulator was the only tricky part. I ended up bending the brackets and mounting it under the left side battery cover. Make sure you have a really good ground connection from the regulator to the frame.  Unfortunately I don't have pictures.

The brushless design of the permant magnet stator has less to go wrong and the regulator is a Ducatti part so I don't worry about availability of replacements.

The only downside (and someone on the boxerworks list has solved this with a lot of work) is that the Omega electronic ignition system does not fit. However this is more of a problem with the older airheads (my /6) than the R65s.

Good luck with the addition.

I wonder if the different sizes are due to the 280 watt alternators coming out.  I don't know what year that happened.  My friend's R75/5 only has a 180 watt unit.

Thanks  Drewboid and everyone! I ordered the 107mm. I need to read things more carefully as Drewboid was right about the application note on the EME site. So 107mm for models 1977 on! :-[

Drew,

Do you have a link to this thread???  I am very curious about the Omega Ignition with the Enduralast Alternator.
