Dallas 2013 International Motorcycle Show
« on: November 09, 2013, 06:07:24 PM »
Pretty Wife and I fought through the horrible 40 miles of Interstate traffic to attend the 2013 version of the IMS. Worth the white knuckles and gritting teeth.

Great show and scored a bag full of swag to boot.

Midway through the evening, we sat down to rest a mo' and enjoy a cold Shiner Bock. One of the BMW exhibit crew joined us and he asked if I had a BMW. I was wearing one of my riding jackets with a BMW roundel on the sleeve...Well, d'oh! Three classic Airheads, sez I.

"We hate you Airhead guys. Y'all keep your bikes for thirty years!" He was joking with us but I got to thinking about the pleasures of owning, riding and the simple maintenance of the Airhead BMW... He's closer to "right" than he may think.

Stopped to visit with the guys at the BMWMOA booth. Got to lay hands on the new R1200GS "Toilet Seat" AV bike with it's custom paint job. Raffling it off they are but tickets are, well, I passed on throwing away that much money.

The Yamaha exhibit, like most all, was huge. One bike caught my eye. It's not Vali's most current ride but still pretty gol'darned impressive.

My friends in the North Texas Norton Owners Association -NTNOA- had a large presence with many classic and vintage Brit iron. A Brough-Superior with side car was most spectacular. I did pony up some cash in support of their annual bike raffle. This years all original and unrestored Norton is a beauty. Have to wait until next October to take delivery. Fingers crossed.

Your comment Monte about the airheads really does rather sum up my feelings about my ownership of the R65LS. What other 30 year old bike that is basically a naked bike would one even hazard to ride 6200 miles west and back in the heat of the summer? Could be that the rider was a bit cracked?!!
The R65 just seems to tick off all the boxes when it comes to choosing a bike for me. The Triumph Bonneville is awfully nice, low and great to look at, but that puny gas range just does not cut it in the prairies and it weighs a ton too! Oh yeah..ya gotta take good drinking time out at the end of a riding day and lube the chain! What's with that!??

Many of my musings I had about bikes and riding on this summer's epic ride revolved around my love for LRB, my R65LS. The only thing I'd change with him is 50 lbs. lighter and maybe the possibility of mounting dual purpose tires...I might try Shinko 244's or 705's for a trial run someday on the extra set of silver wheel rims I own. All this to be better on gravel roads??? Yeesh...the geometry of the bike is probably the most significant aspect of handling on gravel? What do you think? I just need to relax more. :D :o
1983 R65LS - LRB still my favourite!? 1988 Honda NX250, "Toodles Too" and a Suzuki DR650, "Calypso." All stored in the "Brrrmmm Closet".

No worries, Lou. Gotcha covered.

The Brough was an excellent resto complete with a side car. Mostly all black motorcycle on a black carpet is tough to get a decent photo. Gimme a break. :(

The lady in blue jeans and black leather, while texting Dog knows who, blocks the view of the soon-to-be-mine early 70s Norton. Unrestored, it is, but tidied up oh so nice. All the NTNOA folks have to do is draw my winning raffle ticket.

BTW, the "connected chick" is my wife and she's strongly attracted to the new Honda retro CB1100. "If I were to buy a motorcycle, that's the one I'd get." What? She has an hour or so on a Ducati and about that much time on her scooter... So what's wrong with turning her loose on the friendly Honda... after I check her life insurance policy.

Ducati had a massive display of all their "Lose Your License" motorcycles. Their street trackers are ab fab!

Just can't say the same for the half-dozen Duc Umbrella Girls trolling the exhibit. Anorexic is the best description. All bone and no meat.  :'(  Sack of door knobs on mile high heels. Didn't waste any pixels on 'em.

Sadly Jennifer (Rider) died a while back but for a couple of (very) posh birds they were alright and full of fun.

If I were ever to own a "newer" bike it would be a Monster.

Love the looks and the somewhat throwback to simple fast elegant machines (IMO of course...).

Having said that as the big day gets ever nearer, I long for the open road and getting to know the 65.

The adventures begin soon... :D

BTW Monte, that looks a good show, maybe the Brits ought to get somebody across there to get some ideas! I bet you didn't pay $30 bucks to get in did you?

Is this what gets your motor going, Chris?

A Duc Hooligan ought to be delivered with the names of a couple good lawyers (Is that an oxymoron?) and a bail bondsman.  ;D

Tickets were $12.00USD but bough a pair on-line for $8.00USD each. Even Shiner beer was cheaper than at Texas Ranger baseball games!
