Big Bend Ride

In the Big Bend area, actually-- never got into the National Park, with its reported 45 mph speed limit.  Five of us arrived late Monday-- two rode from DFW, and three of us travelled like Harley riders (SUV and trailer).  
Short 85-mile loop on Tuesday.  Wednesday, we did a 262-mile ride which included some legendary mountain roads, which broke my first rule of Hwy design-- never put a 90-degree (plus) turn immediately after the crest of a steep climb. Started on 118 South from our base in Ft. Davis through Terlingua, then the notorious 170 to Lajitas (recently remodelled, but nothing happens before 3PM) and continuing on 170 all the way to the end of civilization as we know it-- Presidio. At this point, one rider's thermometer on his ST1300 was registering 108. From Presidio, made tracks North on 67, arriving just before the deer took over the Highway around 8PM.
NOTE: Sometime that afternoon, I noticed that the 'GEN' light was not glowing at start, or any other time.
The next day was my birthday, so I decided to hang out in the Ft. Davis area. Rode to the peak next to Indian Lodge for some photo ops (and got videod from behind, on the descent), then visited the Ft. Davis Historic Site. Leaving the historic site, the R65 wouldn't start.  Rolled it a little and got it to start, after which it ran great-- about 3 miles back to the hotel.
Back home, Friday night, I put the battery tender on her and it was showing 'charged' after an overnight trickle charge. Boxers by Bruce was full up when we trailered past his location, but that's where the R65 is going next. My (usually flawed) layman's assessment is that the problem may lie with the infamous diode board, if only because the wiring chart shows that wires from both the GEN light and the starter converge at the board.  
Great rides, great fun-- and I suspect that once all the usual suspects are replaced, the R65 will still run longer than I can ride!

That area is great for bikes, I took a trip there in a cage in 1991 stayed in Lajitas, flew some gliders in Marfa, didn't get to see the 'Marfa Mystery Lights' .

Hey, Burt

Happy to hear you had a good visit to the Bend Country. Sounds like your back is "back".

Regarding the non-glowing GEN lamp and the discharged battery; if the GEN bulb goes Tango Uniform, the charging system doesn't do its thing. Check the GEN bulb first. Pull it and apply 12V. Does it stay dead? A new bulb will likely fix your charging problem.

BTW, a simple parallel circuit with an inline resistor will keep you going if the bulb burns out. I have 'em on both my R65s. The bulb's filament may have been jarred loose on some of the roads you've just been on.

Check back with the bulb status, OK?

Hey Burt, I was thinking about you earlier this week and wondering how your ride was going.  You picked the hottest week of the year so far.  Glad to hear the back is working like it should.  Regarding that 90 degree bend after the crest, uh, I believe I took that about 60 mph in a huge van about 6am one morning when everyone in the van was asleep.  Scared the bejeebers out of me!

Hope you get the little yellow rocket sorted out.   Bruce will take care of you I'm sure.

Burt,

I had that problem with my bike too.  But I got stalled out on a long lonely road with my bike piled up with camping gear.  Thought it was the battery.  Lucky for road service, I got a tow and got a new battery.  Left the next day and ended up having the new battery die down the road a few hours later.  Luckily I was close enough to home that the tow service got me home.

I figured this one out - it was the stator rotor!  Easy enough to figure out and replace.  Check out the resistance on the stator.  I've got a little book on the electrics.  Can't remember the name off hand.  I'll look it up and get you that info.  (Oh, I did check the bulb first.  That wasn't it.)  I ended up replacing the rotor and the diode board since I've heard so much about replacing the original diode board.  I upgraded to a better one.

Okay, got the book here now.  Classic Boxer Charging by Rick Jones of Motorrad Elektrik.  www.motoelekt.com  Good book.  I was able to figure out what was wrong by testing the resistance as he suggests in the book.  

Got my parts from them too.  They are the ones to get an upgraded diode board from.  Great people there.  Hope that helps.  

Oh, I forgot to mention about your ride.  Sounds like a wonderful place.  I love to hear about these places and dream of someday maybe riding there.  Glad your bike was able to get you home.
