Rain
« on: January 04, 2010, 04:30:03 PM »
Well I was determined to ride the bike to work today, or at least at 7.30am I was. It's now 7.45 and bucketing down. We've had between 40 and 60 mm rain each day lately and everything is saturated. The meteorologists tell me we have a monsoonal trough over us at the moment so this will be typical for the rest of the week.
Now i don't mind riding home getting wet, but getting to work saturated is not a great way to start the day.

What's the opposite of a rain dance?

'round these here parts, it's likely the Okie Dust Bowl Shuffle. I think Lucky Lou knows that one...
Worked awhile back for those folks north of the Big Red. And they all moved to Californy.

"What's the opposite of a rain dance? "

I wish I knew.  But it sounds like you need better riding gear.

We have 6" of snow today. No prospect of warmer weather for a couple of weeks and It's 22 days and counting since I got to ride the bike to work.

Just for something to do I removed and drained the float bowls to freshen up the fuel in the carbs. Probably not necessary after less than a month. I must have withdrawl symptoms.

On the bright side school is shut today and tomorrow because of  the weather so I don't have to go to work anyway.

I took the first 'real' ride of the year yesterday on the R65, about 140 miles (230km).

Clear sunny, 74 (23 C.) 10 % humidity, 11 F. dew-point temperature, and a light breeze out of the northeast .

Forecast for the next 10 days, is 41F. (5 C), for lows, and 71 (22 C) for highs, and no chance of rain .

Finally, great riding weather has arrived in the suburb of hell I call home .

Riding all year long since 1993 .
I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

Bob  - 74 F?  I'm so jealous.  That is perfect.  A little cool in the morning probably, but perfect after that.  50 - 60 (probably down to 40 in the shady spots that get no sun) is a bit too cold, as I found out, especially at 60 mph!   :D

Darwin-R65 - I thought you'd have fine weather down there about this time of year.  But I guess you would get those monsoons.  So sorry you missed out on your ride to work.  I don't know the opposite of a rain dance as we've been doing the rain dance around these parts so we can get out of this drought.   When it rains now I can't complain as we need it so bad.

Melena, I'm in Darwin whic is above the tropic of capricorn.
Being in the tropics means winter is warm and dry, summer is hot and wet, also cyclone season (Hurricanes for the Americans, Typhoons for the Asians)

After i wrote the above comment I thought "A break in the weather" and rode anyway. I was fine with only a slight drizzle until about 100 metres from work and it bucketed down. As I hadn't found the waterproof strides that morning I spent the morning with wet fronts to my jeans in airconditioning.

I rode home that night and decided it was worth getting wet.

Darwin, what's winter, summer, etc?? we only have three seasons. Wet season, Dry season and the "build up"

Wet Season is Dec - March
Dry season is April - Sept
Build up is Oct-Nov.

Wet season is hot, wet and humid rain cools the afternoon/night
Dry season is warm, sunny, beautiful
Build up is hot, high humidity no sign of rain to cool things down. People going "troppo"

Rode in this morning and encountered a bit of light drizzle.  Wind is picking up (weather says "high wind warning" with gusts up to 60mph today!) and 50% chance of heavy rain.

By the looks of the sky, I'm going to have a wet ride home.  Glad my riding jacket has a rain cover built into a pocket!

My brain is confused by manufacturers of motorcycle apparel.

Why is it that they make a waterproof lining that zips on the inside of a jacket, huh?

Hello!! why not try keep the jacket dry so when I get to my destination I dont have a 10kg mass of soggy material that I have to drag around with me?

I was really looking forward to riding in today, but was thwarted by another storm.  Guess I shouldn't complain... living in a desert that only gets 12" rain annually, we need all the water we can get.

My riding jacket has a rain jacket that zips over it.  When not in use, it folds up into a tiny pocket of the jacket.

Rain and sleet are coming.  I hope to be at work before it hits.  But if not...no matter.

Ride 'em don't hide 'em.   8-)
