Lüneburger Heide in spring
« on: April 04, 2009, 12:01:40 PM »
Hello friends,

It is already warm in northern Germany, but the trees have no leaves. Nevertheless, I have made a nice tour today and a took a couple of photos. I rode across the Lüneburger Heide, between Hamburg and Hanover.
I like the old farm houses with red bricks. My wife Sybille is always planning to buy an old farm for us to live. Those farms are very cheap and not all are in poor condition. Sybille would have enough space for her garden and I could have a workshop for my motorcycles.

This farm here, which lies in a small forgotten village, is not inhabited. It was built in 1752 and looks quite intact.

Some impressions of the villages

To every village belongs a graveyard.
At the end of the war, on April 1945, the British Forces conquered northern Germany. Altough everybody knew that the war was lost, the school boys (I can´t say men) were told that they could stop the British Forces with carabines and panzerfausts. Most of them were not older than 16. They were too young to drink alcohol, but old enough to die. These soldiers were buried just where they died. So every graveyard has got an area for the casualties of war.

End of part 1.

Part 2.

Josef died at the age of 16.

There are graveyards of the Allied Forces, too.

This is Becklingen War Cemetry. The soldiers that have found their last rest here are British and American bomber crews, but also Canadian, Australian and New Zealand infantry and armoured troopers.

It´s very sad place, and I can´t talk when I´m there.
Those men died far from their homes. Please be assured that we keep an eye on this place.

But German history is more than 12 years of Nazi rule.

This is also a grave, but those guys lived 5000 years before.

And here are somy more pics of my short trip.

The name Lüneburger Heide, were we live,  came from this type of landscape. I think it looks a little bit like the siberian taiga.

End of part 2

Part 3

But this old house could be the mansion of The fall of the house of Usher

Have a nice day.

Very very beautiful photos !  And having a classic airhead in them just makes it all seem so "correct", too!

I have been to Germany more often than I have been to the other countries I've visited in Europe (Italy, France, Switzerland, Austria, Nederland) but I am always so impressed by the variety of the architectures in Germany.

Thank you very much for sharing these lovely photos with us - it is a treat!

Dirk - wonderful photos - thank you so much for sharing.  They truly are remarkable.

I see that you live in a notable part of Germany, associated as it is with the end of the war.

It is with profound sadness that I also notice that Josef was killed with less than a month remaining of this conflict.

Outstanding photos, as always, Dirk!   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I see you are now a moderator!  You must be that "European Moderator" that Justin had been searching for!  Now he just needs one for the Asia/Pacific Rim region, Central/South America,  and Africa, and we'll be set!   ;D

Hi John,

no, I´m not a moderator. That´s a mistake. Justin allowed me to change some of my old posting because all the pics disappeared after two weeks. Justin enabled me to repair this postings be giving me a moderator status for this job. Now it´s finished an I´m looking forward to become a private again!

Let's see. PLC is from "Down Under" and is a Wiki section moderator, does that count?

The judges have conferred and have decided to allow the referral of PLC from Australia as an "International Moderator". (snicker....) ::)
