BMW S Fairing Shell
« on: November 27, 2008, 04:58:06 PM »
FYI - Bob's BMW sells replica S Fairings at:  http://store.bobsbmw.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=428

They state it will not fit early R65's (I have a 79) although it looks like it would line up.  Does anyone know why?  Is there a problem w an S fairing particularly or just Bob's?

I ordered a JC Whitney S style shell but my blinkers are in the way and it is much too flimsy and cheap for me to even bother cutting it.  That one is going back.

Still looking for the right shield - John

Off the top of my head I'd guess, as the fairing is to fit R100/7 types: The headlamp hole is an inch bigger than required for the R65. The /7 has a different top yoke so the mountings will be different. /7 instruments are in a different position. Possibly R65 instruments will clash against the 'dash board'. Later monoshock R65 s may be closer to /7 for the purpose of fitting this fairing. I'm sure others will be able to help you with the technicalities of fitting an S fairing though.

Well, duh... I think I found the A to my Q.  The attached photo I found on Ebay shows the S Fairing clearly attached to the fork tubes.  The R65 has a different (incompatible?) tube arrangement.  Anyone outsmart that?

John,
I have a similar shield.  Not the JC Whitney one, but similar $49 dollar job.  Here is how I installed it.  It ended up being very ridged.
You need a dremel tool to cut the plastic around the turnsignals and some electrical fasteners and rubber coated cable holders found at Home Depot for a few bucks.  I aso used the dremel on the inside under the shield so that I could clear the spedometer and tac better.  I finished off the edge with some door guard found at Pep Boys.  Here are some picks that might save you a few bucks.
I don't think I spent more that $10 bucks on the hardware.

Here is a little better shot from the front.  By the way, mine is a 1979 also, with a 1981 seat and rear section so that I could get the added storage in the rear.

Good Luck

Perhaps I judge too harshly...  Mike, your design certainly looks like it stiffens up the fairing quite a bit and your method snugs the fairing up to the headlight as well.  I may think about your suggestions before I send mine back.  I may have more questions if I go your route.  Thanks for responding.

By the way... awesome R65.  I only hope mine looks that good someday.

That is a very nice bike! You obviously take great pride in her. The only thing I can see that I would really question - and this is me just being my usual anal self - the R65 decals look a little large...Well done with the screen.  :)

Oh - by the way, what type of lights have you got - I'm looking at some pia's for mine. Are they connected through a toggle switch on the dash?

You are correct the R65 on the side is a little big.  I own a sign shop and cut them out of reflective.  Athough they are larger than stock by about 205 the reflective nature of the material makes them look larger in the photo than then they really are.

The lights are bright white diodes.  An ebay purchase.  Actually made for a car.  I had foot peg mounting brackets from a harley.  Removing the pegs gave me the perfect bracket for the engine guards.   They use very little power and are amazingly bright.

Thanks,
Mike
