Off to Willville tomorrow...
« on: May 22, 2008, 04:42:54 PM »
I've been on vacation all week, and the stress of being home too much has nearly killed me, so it's time for a mental health break. Planning to be there by late morning/early afternoon Friday, and stay thru Sunday, leaving around a similar time then. Definitely be up this time, come hell   [smiley=flamethrowingsmiley.gif] or high water  [smiley=drowning.gif]

If anyone's in the neighborhood, stop by for a fresh & frosty one. I'll be in the blue tent beside the silver Guzzi.  ;)

Damn, wish I could be buzzing up there this weekend!  Rats.....  :(

However, I'm presently laying the ground work for going to the Gathering of the Clans in June, though.  And yeah, I know it falls on Father's Day weekend, but I'm going at it from the viewpoint that this is the ideal Father's Day gift!   ;)

Good deal, JJ, glad to hear you're trying to make the Gathering of the Clans this year. I'm hoping to get there too; the last couple years it's fallen on Father's Day weekend, as you say, and I've missed it.

I'm totally cool to miss my own dadhood, my kids are in college and know the deal, but my own dear ol' Pop is still around and I've never felt right about blowing town that weekend. But, this year, my nephew is coming home the following weekend from a year abroad, and it's also his birthday, so  his mom/my sister's talking about a delayed B-day/Father's Day/Reunion combo thing.

Works for me, and puts me at the Gathering the weekend prior.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Back home from the latest jaunt to Willville, and happy to report that a good time was had by all.
Will hosted a moderately-sized but lively crew, with the distance winners being a possible tie between riders from New Hampshire and Wisconsin  :o  It also seemed to be "couples week", as there were at least 5 husband/wife teams there, each on their own bikes, in addition to the "Wingnuts" group out of Greensboro, the females of which always seem to have had a bit too much wine and no built-in personal volume controls. At least they pass out early!

It always does my heart good to hear folks that've camped in dozens, maybe hundreds of spots over the years, absolutely rave about Willville and it's laid-back atmosphere, cleanliness, etc. I'm very fortunate to be only 80 miles away from one of the premier motorcycle camps on the entire East Coast, and some of the finest riding roads pretty much anywhere.

Here's a few pics from a crafts fair/"hit or miss" engine festival deal that was going on "downtown"
Check out the gasoline powered, kickstart-only Maytag, with belt driven wringer and custom sausage grinder attachment. Note the blacked-out exhaust and left-side tank shifter too. Back in the day, only a select few lucky housewives could afford one of these luxuries!
Of course, the John Deere grinding wheel and ancient ice cream maker were pretty cool too [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Freakin' Cool!!!!!    ;)

Glad you had a good time there at "the promised land", better known as Willville!  Wish like crazy I coulda gone too.  It's Memorial Day afternoon and I'm stuck here at home waiting on my wife's ex-son in law to call so we can meet him halfway between home and Columbia to drop off the granddaughter.  He's busy "tubing", but said he'd call when he gets done.  Some son in law.... Would rather tube down a river than be with his own daughter.  This day is pretty much shot already..... >:(

Poor John!! Not fair....Maybe the Gathering of the Clans rally coming up will make up for some "blues" on this your Memorial Day holiday.
From what I read on the BMW ONS mag, I gather one does not need to pre-register for the Gathering of the Clans in Ferguson NC. Is that true???  It would be something for 4 of our forum members to attend. John, NC Steve, Rob and me.
1983 R65LS - LRB still my favourite!? 1988 Honda NX250, "Toodles Too" and a Suzuki DR650, "Calypso." All stored in the "Brrrmmm Closet".

Sue,

Make that 5!   ;D  I think Graham and I are planning to make it as well.  I just need to look up the details...

Steve - sounds like a great weekend in the mountains.  Those old hit or miss engines are pretty neat - can't say I've ever seen one on a Maytag before, though  :D  Alas, we were in Hotlanta (well, Griffin, just south) spending Memorial weekend with the family.  I put together a little geocaching exercise to share with the family - fun!   :P

We just read in the news that a motorcyclist was killed on Hwy 8 up that way...did you hear anything about that while you were there?
