Mick's Worldwide R65 Adventure
« on: March 12, 2007, 09:49:39 PM »
You might want to check out a new entry on R65 registry, a rider named Mick MacMillan has a post on his riding adventures in South America. Puts the rest of us into a different catagory, almost has a line on the movie of a year ago the Motorcycle Diaries.

You should appreciate this one in particular, Bob and Semper:

Happy to be back on the ground after achieving what I imagine to be something of a record for an R65 BMW - 570mph, without even turning a wheel, in the hold of a Jumbo jet.

It's kind of amazing from a standpoint of the everyday mundane existence that the majority of us live, to just go out and experience things the rest of us can only dream of. A quote from the Discovery Channel : LIFE UNSCRIPTED!

The only way my R65 would achieve 570 mph, would be to drop it out of the Space Shuttle while in orbit!

I sent Mick MacMillan an email yesterday, about our forum here, and it looks like he is our newest member, with the user name Mick.

I recieved 2 emails from Mick today, and he's not sure if he has anything of real interest to contribute to our site ! I assured him that I'm sure the membership would be interested, on how to go about a major trip, planning and the actual ride itself.

I received an email from Mick today, and his journey should bring him through Phoenix around the last week of May or the first week of June. Sadly my work schedule will most likely prevent me from meeting him, all I know about his ride after Phoenix, is that he's heading for California. So if anybody on the west coast can hook up with him, send him a PM. He will post his route when he gets closer to the US.

He's in Cartagena, Colombia, with a sick bike, looks like the bean can failed, he has the bean can, ignition control unit and a coil on order from Bob's BMW, this city is on the Caribbean Sea about 100 miles or so northeast of the Panama/Colombia border. He has his bike secured to the main mast of the Melody a sailing yacht. He sets sail for Panama tomorrow morning, for I believe the city of Colon, Panama where he hopes to meet up with  his ignition parts. I guess he didn't want to attempt crossing the Darien Gap with his R65.

Bob,
I've pm'd you my local contact info. Should Mick decide to roll this way my lumpy pull out couch with little privacy, along with my garage and collection of cast off tools are at his disposal. I can also offer free internet and non gourmet home cooked food but I do have a case of Scottish ale at the ready.

I don't know if anybody is following Mick's progress, but there is a new entry about his experience in New Zealand.

This is so not fair.    ;)

Having read Egan's "Leanings", I and II, just finished watching the "Long Way Round" special edition, then I'm reading about the just-completed "Long Way Down" trip earlier this month.  Plus there's that "Oasis of my Soul" cycledude who's living on the road now with a GS , a sidecar, and his dog. (link for those unfamiliar, http://www.theoasisofmysoul.com/)
Now, I'm hit with the "Adventures of Mick" again: dammit, I'd just about forgotten about Mick.

One good ScottColumbus slideshow, and I'm may just lose it.
What is a mere mortal to do???!!   ::)
