New Opinion Of Metzeler Tires And EBC Brakes
« on: July 13, 2008, 07:20:49 PM »
We had a fierce thunderstorm here in the Phoenix area when I was getting off of work today at 16:30.

This is the first real test of the EBC steel floating rotors, and graphite brake pads in really wet conditions.

I have to say that I am impressed with the brakes, I had 10 miles of 'flooded' roadway ( 2inches of running water across the pavement), on Interstate 10, when I got off of the expressway, I had braking power almost as good as when they were dry, I went through 2 flooded intersections ( 6-10 inches of running water ), and still no brake fade.

The Metzeler tires gave me no problems at all, so I have changed my opinion of the ME33/ME99, and the Lazertec series tires.

The original OEM stainless rotors, and OEM pads were completely useless in wet conditions, so I didn't have a good opinion of the Metzeler tires until today.

The shop that put on my tires said that the new compounds are a lot sticker than they used to be.  They had a hell of a time getting the front tire's bead to set properly.  They said in the old days they would just pop into place...now they take a lot of coaxing since they get hung up on the rim.

Steve, the Macadams are the same way.  On my tubeless rims they "pop" like they should but on the snowflake rims I have to put in around 100 psi and even then they just slowly "crawl" into place - even with things well soaped.

Ditto the 100psi with my new Bridgestone Spitfires. Felt like I was an EOD guy. Needed longer arms.  ;D

I have a clip-on tire chuck so I attached it, put it outside around the corner, and cranked up the regulator while I was hiding...  So far nothing has ever let loose and I've been changing these for about 5 years now.  I don't remember this issue way back when when tires were meant to run with tubes.  They seemed to seat better and were a lot more flexible and easier to get on the rim.  I used the BMW tire pump numerous time (I had to fix 5 or 6 flats on the AL-Can Hwy.) and was able to get everything seated OK with the old Conti Twins.

I recently fitted a Metzeler 400 18 "Perfect" tyre  (tubed) on the front.  It was a pain to fit and took several inflate, deflate, reinflates before it seated properly.  No problems now it's on. Does the job!  (EDITED- Should read 3.25 x 18) Sorry!)

Sorry!  It's a 3.25 x 18 on the front (I'm getting senile!!!)  I have a Pirelli Supersport 4.00 x 18 on the rear at present but may soon be replacing it.
