1.8 R65s
« on: December 01, 2009, 05:25:43 PM »
Greetings all, - Short time listener, first time caller.
With winter fast approaching and my usually long list of moto-projects eerily short, I succumbed to a moment of weakness and am now the proud (?) owner of approximately 1.8 R65s.
My wife's cousin, having the immediate need to reduce garaged possessions due to relocation, decided to offer me his partially disassembled 1979 R65 and completely disassembled and partial-ized 1983 R65LS...oh my! What have I got myself into... :o
Lots of stuff in boxes; brand-new, used and assorted flotsum and jetsum. I'll post pics as soon as I'm allowed so as to share the horror/joy :-/

Welcome to all things R65, Oldbikesrcool [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Just to show that our hearts are all in the right place, permit me to offer to soak up all that R65 flotsam and jetsam cluttering your garage. PM me for my shipping address. ;D

Yes! Post pics pronto. We are simple by design 'round here; some more so than others like my homeboys Lucky Lou and Bengt Phorqs...and ME!

Welcome home Oldbikesrcool!

Good luck with your project.  There are lots of places to get parts to make it 2.0 bikes!  Post your questions here!  The only dumb question is the one not asked!

Many helping hands make easy paddling!   ;)

Just be aware that as far as the engine and gearboxes are concerned, you have two different bikes and they are not easily interchangeable.

You will be fine if you generally keep the 1983 drivetrain(engine/clutch/gearbox/final drive) stuff together and the 1979 stuff together.

Looks like a cafe racer and a bobber/urban sport bike....whatever you yanks call em!

Have fun

Thanks kindly all, -
Oh, my. What to do. Perhaps keep it and fiddle with it over the winter? Sell it part-by-part on FleeBay/CraigsList? Run screaming? Wonder off into the wilderness whilst carrying a shopping bag of scrap cardboard and muttering incantations and nonsensical dribble into beard?
The mostly assembled bike you see in the pics is 'technically' the '79. The PO ran it for a short time then picked up the mostly-parts-bike '83 LS through fleebay. Since the '79 engine/trans were satisfactorily operational, he decided to make something of a Frankenbike out of the two. He got as far as replacing bearings in the steering head, swing arm, wheels from the LS including the twin front disc up front, cleaned up and lined the tank, reupholstered the seat, etc.
He then evidently realized the LS wheel hub/final drive wouldn't work with the standard R65 drive shaft arrangement (? :-?), so intended to fit the LS final drive unit next. About this time the train came off the rails.

At this point, I'm leaning toward continuing on the POs course and heading, install the LS final drive (?), carbs, bodywork and see if it will start, run and stop. Maybe then, reassess. Suggestions? Anyone?  :-/ Whatdoyerthink?

The LS will be worth more when restored if done right...

I would do the LS if you have the parts.

This advise worth 2 cents...not what it used to be.  8-)

The LS does appear to be the more attractive of the two from a restoration stand point. After a second cursory look, it appears there may be enough of the original parts to get it mostly there. Unfortunately, the PO said the LS engine was purchased 'as-is not running' condition. (i.e.: $$$$ to reverse said condition). The standard R65 bike was, at least, complete and running. I'll post more when I make some room and get knee-deep in it!!! ;D
