I got this blind hole bearing puller set from Harbor Freight about 10 years ago .

+1 on the blind bearing puller Bob.

I watched Brook Reams’ swingarm bearing replacement video and he used the same set that I’ve purchased (below) which was about $65 in our currency, so probably even cheaper for you guys. Its Chinese made, but ok quality for what it is and it managed to do both my swingarm bearings and my rear wheel bearings which I did yesterday.

Jschara - I managed to get a fine screw driver blade between the top hat and the seal lip and managed to lever it up one side then the other. As BPT says, they’re not in there too tight.

Interestingly, my rear wheel bearing assembly looked nothing like the Clymer diagram? I’ve been chasing a bearing noise and a rear end wobble for a couple of months, and I think I found both! judging by the state of one of the outer bearing races.... That looks to me to be the result of incorrect pre load on those tapered wheel bearings.

It has been awhile since I had to do this on any of my airheads, but I also had used a similar tool to the one Bob mentioned on getting a reluctant seal to come out
Airhead #12178 ? BMWMOA #123173 ?BMWRA #33525 ?GSBMWR #563 ?1982 BMW R65LS ?1978 BMW R100/7 1998 Kawasaki Concours

RE: getting the seal out

the tube in your way is what the seal runs on. It has a very small top hat which is what is stopping it coming out. It does come out through the seal using your fingers, you have to tilt and pull. The seals are very strong and forgiving and you should not nick or damage it doing this.

Then use the open ended spanner or a seal puller to pop it out. These corkscrew ones look fiendish but are very good. The intermediate and large ones work well on these seals. The pointy bit goes on the inside (away from the seal lip) and you lever one of the bends against any handy surface inside (such as the inner race of the bearing itself).

22x40x7 R23 seals around £3 each on the bay.
