Ignition switch
« on: March 25, 2016, 01:02:54 AM »
Hey gang, the keyed ignition switch on my 83' LS has self destructed and there doesn't seem to be a BMW replacement for this part.  I tried to order BMW part #51251243501 but the vender refunded my payment.  This part number seems to be for a specific key code so I'm not sure if it would work anyways.  Is there a universal part that is known to fit?  I don't really want to replace the keyed switch with something hokey pokey, like a relay and a hidden toggle switch.  Ideas?

Hello !
Funny you ask that ! I'm waiting mine for a few weeks now.
In Europe, BMW set up a direct shop for old cars and bikes.
The ignition contact is marked as available and "orderable".
Better yet, they ask for a code meaning that they can produce one switch with YOUR key code.
This is what I ordered, and nobody told me it was NLA but they told me it will take some time.
This doesn't surprise me. When I restarted my R65 in 2012, I ordered the little rubber check valve at the bottom of the airbox in the post 81 models. It was said to be available. But I waited for more than one year for it to show  !
I've just checked the BMW shop, and that ignition switch is NLA now. So either they found none in the bin when I ordered mine, or it was NLA for some time but they forgot to switch it off on the fiche...
I've to inquire at my dealer to see what status has my order ...

You might try sending a message to the eBay seller , lamontsanfurd. He is a good guy to work with and seems to part out more R65's than anyone else. It may not be listed on eBay but ask and if he has it he will sell it.
Keep your bike in good repair: motorcycle boots are not comfortable for walking.

Link to Larry "lamontsanfurd" Chabira eBay store.

Larry is an Austin Texas forum member that every once in awhile pops in. I've bought several items, including my 1983 R65, from Larry. Betcha he has an OEM switch and key. Give him a shot.
