Liquid Crystal Displays
« on: July 10, 2007, 07:35:59 PM »
I'm looking at liquid crystal displays for oil temperature and voltmeter . The only LCD that I have had on my R65 was an air temperature indicator, and the display 'washed out' in temperatures above 100 F. Is this a commn problem with all LCD's?

Yes, though they are getting better and am sure if shielded from strong sunlight will give acceptable service (under a tinted S fairing say?!?).
I once pulled apart the speedo/tach unit on a rice cooker I had to stick a cheap digital watch face in there to give me a clock, reasoning that a year or so till I needed to change the battery was worth going to the trouble of the dis-assembly. It lasted only a few days till the display blanked out, and on only the coldest of mornings would give a meagre display till it hit sunlight or warmed up. Seems to permanently affect the display.
