How to center the clutch plate
« on: November 04, 2018, 10:33:42 AM »
Can anyone let me know their technique for centering the clutch plate on a 1979 R65.  I have seen a tool for /5, /6 and K bikes but haven't come across one for the R65.

I have the later clutch carrier, I don't know if this will work on the earlier bikes.
I install the clutch plate and the rear plate, I can't remember if it's the pressure ring or plate .
Before I tighten the bolts. I measure the distance from the clutch plate to the edge of the rear plate, get as close as possible to even all the way around .
Put the transmission on and install all the fasteners but don't tighten them up all the way leave it a few threads before it tightens up, insert the clutch rod through the transmission until it stops .
I rotate the output of the transmission and either push on the clutch rod, or use a rubber mallet to hit the rod, you don't need a lot of force .
Hasn't failed me yet .

You are looking for a tool for pre-1981 airheads. I don't think there is any difference right back to the R50/R75 inception, but if you look for a tool that will fit a stroke 7 R100/R80 then it will fit the R65.

Alternatively you can use a dial gauge to center the plate, but I'm here to tell you that is slow and tedious.

Code: 99350 at Motobins for GBP13.00 and it would appear I'm right, the same tool fits virtually all pre-1981  bikes.

Never looked at a R65 clutch, but i turned up a centering tool out of wood on my metal lathe to do my ford cortina clutch and it worked well.

I used a PVC pipe of the same diameter as the hole. Glued a bit of plastic to close the front, and drilled a hole in the center for the clutch actuation rod. The bit of plastic was from the cap of a jug...
The longest part was to find the correct plastic parts and glue them...
Can't post a pict as I've unfortunately binned the tool in a tidying crisis...

Isn't that a problem when cleaning up, it's why i try to avoid doing it.
