Gearbox Seals
« on: February 28, 2014, 03:25:45 AM »
Hi there. While I have my gearbox in the kitchen - yes I'm single - I would like to replace the 3 seals. Is this possible without dismantling the box? Can I remove them fairly easily and then - using a suitable sized drift - drift the new ones into place?
I have tried Snowbum's site for info but haven't been able to find any information. My workshop manual is packed away at the moment. Thanks ....... Adrian

At the age of 16 when I was still living at home I once smuggled a car engine up the stairs stripped it for overhaul on the bedroom floor and hid it under my bed. OK it was only a 500cc twin cylinder air cooled  But I still got earful when my mum found it.

I've never done it but I believe you can change all the seals from the outside of the box. Gear change seal is easy enough. Input seal should be OK but the output seal is going to be a bear as you have to remove the drive flange. Is it actually  leaking ?

G'day Adrian,

Yeah, I'm with Barry. All three can be done from outside but the output one requires the flange to be removed. You won't be able to hold the box solid enough to do that on your kitchen table. You also really need a special puller and a breaker bar about 6 foot long.

Cheers

Okay thanks guys - I might give it to my local workshop then - the seals aren't leaking but they have been in the box since 1984 so when I put it all back together in the future I want to be sure that nothing will leak  ;)
