Old idea revisited
« on: May 17, 2009, 02:54:46 PM »
Now that the '81 R65 is perking right along and the Spring weather is close to cooperating, I'm back on the repaint project on the '83 R65.

Previously, I had repaired a small dent in the left-rear upper corner of the fuel tank... Right on the tank's crease lines! Anyway, that's done.

The tank roundels needed to come off -they're brand new by the PO. As y'all know, the thin aluminum discs are muy flexible and will bend if you look at them cross-eyed. I remembered reading somewhere about using dental floss to saw through the foam lined, double-sided tape that hold 'em on.

Well, that idea works just fine so I won't need to buy new farkles. [smiley=thumbup.gif] Sad, but the PO had repainted the tank without removing the tank badges. [smiley=thumbdown.gif] Just a little extra prep sanding for me.

I have used dental floss in this way successfully in the past.

However the last set on my R100 were not touched by it and I ended up tearing them off in bit by bit with pliers and the like.

Give it a go, but be prepared to be replaceing them.

Cheers

Use the heavy flat floss.  If your glue is rather "fresh" it seems I remember the floss sticking and dragging badly and I finally had to use some WD-40 with the floss...

What type of adhesive, or tape do you use to re-install the badges ?

I've always had good luck with silicone adhesive/sealant - NOT the gasket-maker stuff...

Ditto.

And an "oops"... I forgot to mention that I used a heat gun to warm the badge and tank before flossing. Don't get it so hot that the clear sealer tape on the farkle's face lifts off.

I was wondering about that clear tape, I didn't notice it when I replaced the badges about 5 years ago, and now I can see that it is starting to 'bubble up' in places.
