True dat, Lowen. Yet another example of a carefree SOB intent on & content to roaming the world.
And here all along I proudly thought I'd misspent my youth:  coulda been seriously misspending it!!

Perhaps we too should abandon careers, families and lawn chores, and hit the open road! Hell yeah!!  8-)

(...just as long as we're back by the start of school, or within 2 weeks, or when we're told to, whichever comes 1st... ;))

I just emailed Sean and told him that everyone here at our forum is rooting for him to get through his trip in one piece, and afterwards maybe be able to put it all in a book!  Wouldn't that be sweet?   ;)

Sean's adventures in the Middle Eastern countries brought back a lot of memories of my residence of about a year in Esfahan,Iran, where I was first introduced to motorcycling. About 25 or so co-workers of defense contractor Bell Helicopter International took me out into the Iranian desert, and let me get my first experiences of off road motorcycling on mid ' 70's asian single cylinder, two stroke, dual purpose bikes. It's an experience I will never forget!

Unfortunately, all I got out of the country with, when we were evacuated the second week of January, 1979, was two suitcases of clothes and a few souvenirs. Everything else that I had was supposedly shipped out of the  country, but never materialized afterward. If your memory is a little hazy about the time frame, this was during their revolutionary uprising that eventually forced the Shah of Iran out of the country. I left  two days after the Shah had left, and had 18 bullet holes in the windows of our fourth floor apartment when we left. We had lived under martial law, and a sun down to sun up curfew for the last 6 months we were there. Take it from me , if you live in a country that has declared martial law, it is long past the time you should have left.

My ex/late father-in-law spent quite a bit of time in Iran during the early '70s, as an engineer with Boeing. This was all before the sh*t hit the fan during the hostage crisis of the Carter presidency, of course. As much as he tended to ramble at times, I always enjoyed listening to his stories about the Iranian culture and people, and what a beautiful, spotlessly clean & well-mannered place it was to be.

Like anywhere else, there were definitely some "bad" sections that should be avoided, but overall, he said he always felt as safe if not more so than he did here in the U.S. (particularly since he'd grown up in Brooklyn, NY). Of course, the Shah still reigned then, and the Shah's boys "didn't play."

Times have changed, obviously, but all politics aside, I hope everyone at least realizes that this area of the world is indeed the Cradle of Life, and can at least respect the ancient cultures & heritage that began here. Hopefully it can be preserved, so that we or our kids may all see it for ourselves someday.

This has been my only real contact with a different culture, and if you get politics and religious fanaticism out of the equation, the Iranian people on the whole were a great people to be living with. If the political climate hadn't gone the way it has, I think I would be back there working again. I visited ancient cities that were 2-3,000 years old, the 231 years of history that the US has pales in comparison with this culture.  It was my first taste of a desert region, which explains why I live in Phoenix now. It's too bad that governments get in the way and !#%& up a country with their twisted ways to make things 'better' for the masses ! I'll get off my soap box, and take my medication now !

Hey, everyone....

I got an email back this morning from Sean Howell, who was mentioned earlier in this thread going all over the world on his R65!  Here is his response to my email, along with what I sent him originally:

If anyone whats to send him an email of support (which I think would be a nice thing to do) his email address is:  sean_howman@yahoo.com.au

Hi John,

Thanks for the vote of confidence, I'm back in Spain now after finishing a trip down the west coast of Africa. The bike gave me no trouble as usual, but it needs a bit of TLC after the African roads. I bent my front wheel rim in Senegal, lost an exhaust pipe in Namibia, snapped a gear lever in Angola and had the panniers racks and various other things fixed and welded en route. My closest call was 180km from Timbuktu, when I lost control in some deep sand and smashed the left cylinder into a concrete post. The rocker cover was knocked off the engine and there was sand in the valves. However, I managed to fix it by the side of the road and continue, no problem.

Do you organize a rally for R65 owners? I'll probably be in north America in a year or so, it might be good to make it to one.

Cheers,

Sean

I think we need to start another thread on Sean's adventure. Can one of the moderators move this part of the current thread ?

Done.

I renamed your thread "R65 Registry" to something more descriptive, while I was at it.  Hope you don't mind!

Wow for Sean!!!! My measly travels this summer pale in comparison even though I have 16,700 miles on the clock BUT I haven't done it on LRB either!!! So, after LRB gets his valves and head work done maybe I can get some confidence from Sean's travels and take the R65 too. I bet he is very mechanical and just a bit brave don't ya think?? I wonder how old he is?
1983 R65LS - LRB still my favourite!? 1988 Honda NX250, "Toodles Too" and a Suzuki DR650, "Calypso." All stored in the "Brrrmmm Closet".
