Im new here is my 82 r65ls
« on: March 15, 2016, 12:54:12 PM »
hello all i am new to this forum i have had my bike for 4 years now and have restored it. i found it sitting in a garage in long beach. it hadn't moved in 10 years but with some fresh fuel and oil and a new battery it fired right up. i will attach pictures on before, after and current. now i would like to make some very slight mods to it that will benefit the bike but not take to much away from its originality. i would like to lengthen the rear swing arm and replace the front suspension with something a little beefier, as well as maybe some slight engine modifications for a little more power while im on the southern California freeways. any help and advice is highly appreciated.

sweet! I have an 82 LS and also have the avons. Do you get the wobbles on the freeway grooves when you get it up over 75mph? Wondering if its the tires or the steering.
thanks!

Wow! Your minor mods are going to require some seriously extensive work and a pretty hefty cash flow. Easiest way to get more power from the R65 would be to swap in an R80 engine.

Glad to have you with us. Please keep the photos coming of your changes and mods.

yes i do but i believe its the steering i was advised when i first got the bike to get a steering damper but i never did. it wobbled with the original tires that were on the bike also. it likes to follow the rain grooves.

well i would like to keep the factory engine if possible. i have a good connection on all bmw airhead parts through a guy in LA. im trying to do an entirely bolt on build so i can eventually sell the bike with all the original parts being still usable.

Nice! Very nice!

As I'm doing some mods on an 82 LS myself (when work is no in the way), I have a couple of questions.
The Avon tyres. Any more details on them?
Those bars, are they the stock LS bars? I really like them and my original LS back in the 80's had similar. My current bike had higher, wider bars and I was told they were either an option or were "American" bars (I'm in Australia)
Are those wheels painted or powder coated black and is the final drive the same colour on the right side??

Wish you success with your project.

the bars are stock. every 65ls i have seen has the same bars. the wheels are powder coated and the final drive i did have rebuilt/resealed but i did not paint it, so it is either painted silver or bare metal. the wheels were silver when i bought the bike and i believe they came from factory white. as far as the avons they came reccomended from my uncle who had them on his 65ls and i took him at his word. they are a great summer tire, and hold the road great but they can be quite slick in the rain. they dont really have any fine water sipes just large channels.
