S fairing on R65
« on: January 25, 2007, 12:23:17 PM »
Just scored a good deal on an S fairing here in SF...it's off getting painted right now. For those of you with one on your bike, what hardware is crucial for a solid mounting? Poking around online hasn't exactly been conclusive on this topic, moreover it seems like Bob's BMW's page on their fairing notes that it doesn't fit dual-shock R65s.

Right now it has the two pivoting arm-like attachments...I get that these attach to brackets which attach to the forks. I also understand that the turn-signal stalks go through the holes in fairing's sides. Do I need the gaskets and clip that encompass the stalks there?

Anyway, basically I'm just looking for S-fairing tips and tricks. Thanks. (Oh, photos would be wonderful!) Thanks!!!

I know that mounting an RS or RT just requires the factory mounting brackets (and different instrument mount) but they are both frame mounted fairings.  The R65 forks being not the same as the others will most likely turn this into a modify/fabricate exercise.

I'm wanting to say that the S fairing used the lower turn signal stalks and also some upper mounts that were attached to the forks by way of the big nuts on top of the fork tubes.  The R65 does not have top fork nuts like the other bikes do...

Oh, please do. You know when you use the word "building" to refer to an email, it's a doozy.

Just found this site...but I'm not sure it's totally helpful, as his was a repro w/ no fittings:

Anybody else out there?

After looking at the link you provided, it might prove prudent to work out the mounting hardware before getting the fiberglass painted. This is referring to the bit about having to relocate the holes for the turn signal mounts.

Also, has the fact of the different size headlights been taken into account? Might look strange if you don't change, might be expensive too change.  :-/

I know. It definitely would've been prudent to work out the mounting before getting it painted. I'm quite disappointed in myself...

Alas, it's ready. The painting, that is. I'll get it home today and see how screwed I am. Didn't realize the headlight was the wrong size, either...at least it's smaller than correct...maybe I could kluge something together...

Kind've bummed, though...

Just a thought, jhebass01.  If you haven't messed with the newly painted fairing yet, maybe now that it's painted you could get more out of it than you've paid for it plus the cost of the paint job and then get the right fairing for the R65.

I bought a Windjammer fairing for my bike and have yet to get it on or painted or anything and now I'm rethinking that whole thing.  Do I want it or not?   :-/  Decisions, decisions.

And if anyone would like to try their hand at reproducing that neat little Tracy 1/4 fairing I have, I would consider lending it out to the right person.

Get someone like Gustafsson Plastics to make the windshields/headlight covers...

I don't know what legalities would be involved, but the headlight opening is the right size.

No, I am afraid it is NOT for sale.

I'd like to post pictures of my crappy solution, but the "Attach" function doesn't work...any hints?

I had trouble with the attach feature on my last attempt, also.  I just put it on my pBase site and linked from there.

Here's the link:

Remarkably close to the Tracy!  I don't see the air dam going all the way across the lower edge.

It could be a different model.  I know my first one (1981?) didn't have the headlight cover, al la RS/RT.

The attach function is to upload ONE file to be attached to your post.  The file must be of an authorized type (by extension), less than 256k (I think), and located on your hard drive or accessible network drive.  You just click the "Browse" button and Windows takes over from there...

I hate to start this over again, but how do you attach more than one pic? I've tried photobucket with & w/o their Flock browser, Yahoo photos, iPhoto, and still can't get but 1 pic per post to "attach".
Of course, I've never claimed competence..... ;)

And Rob, yeah, I thought the fairing is very much like your Tracy, no?
