LuckyD's Cafe Build
« on: July 11, 2012, 01:02:23 AM »
Hey everyone! Just wanted to start a post on my cafe build. Hope you guys enjoy!

Here is how I received. It's not in that bad of a condition.

I bought a seat from Air Tech Streamline along with Boxer Metal rear fender delete bracket.

Since I've gotten the look I wanted I wanted to paint the frame along with removing the engine to fix oil leaks. It's a slight leak but since I don't have a bike life I figured it would easier if I had the engine out on a work bench. Here is it's current state.

Yea I picked it up for 2200. It came with an extra motor, progressive springs, which I still need to install, and a front fairing which I don't plan on installing.

As for the original seat, not sure what I plan to do with it. I may sell it down the line along with the spare motor and other parts.

Just an update, tomorrow I'm planning to bring my tank, cafe seat, side covers, and front fenders for paint! Can't wait!

As for the dismantle of the bike. I have everything off the just need to pull the motor but waiting for my new work bench to come in. All the work I've been doing have been on the ground. :'(

looks awesome, i think i will have to order that seat as well, did you get it with or without rondel? also did you get one of their seatpans as well? which one would best fit our tanks?

I ordered one with the rondel on it and the seat pan I ordered was the short one. You will have to trim both the seat pan and the seat to fit the R65.

It's been a while since I've updated my build thread. I have gone back to work and it's been pretty busy. So today I was able to remove the engine and thats about it. In the next few days I plan to replace the push rod grommets and the oil pan seal. Those were the only thing that needed to be replaced. I think I'll also replace the neutral switch.

Also since the engine is out I plan to install progressive front springs. I hear of talk saying the springs should be stored in an up right position in a garbage bin. Mine has been stored on it's side, will I have any issues?

There are varying opinions about using the progressive springs for the R65.

BTW, Did you align yours in a magnetic North-South or the East-West configuration?

Is that magnetic North or True North? [smiley=3stooges.gif]

I haven't heard that one before. I think from the previous posts you've probably got the message not to worry about it.

Springs are one of the simplest bits of engineering on a bike but one of the most misunderstood. I think we worry far too much about them getting "sagged out" as in being permanently shortened. My fork springs have been under compression for 33 years and they are still the correct length and well within spec. I doubt they'd come to much harm in storage provided they are not stored deliberately bent.

lol thanks guys!

Well I plan on removing the front forks today along with the gauges and hopefully send out the frame this week to get powder coated.

Handlebar controls, they are a bit faded. Do you have any suggestions on restoring it?

Sorry I meant I was going to use the stock fender. As for the fairing I don't plan on using it. I may sell it.
