81 R65 Restoration
« on: January 22, 2012, 11:12:54 AM »
Attached is my link for my restoration.  Lots of pictures for almost all assembly, and dis-assembly.  Can't remember having more fun wrenching. The bike was in very poor condition when I received it.  The PO stored the bike unprotected for many years at water's edge here at the San Diego Yacht Club.  Overtaken with rust and corrosion.  It was fitted with a Luftmeister fairing which now rests in the corner of my garage.  Brake system was completely frozen with moisture infiltration but the mechanical condition was in quite excellent shape.  This has been one of the most enjoyable bikes I've ever owned.  It performs very strong and handles (and stops) like a cat on a carpeted floor.  It's back to life now and has become a prized possession.  I now understand all your passion for these often unappreciated bikes.  I truly believe our 650's are experiencing a resurgence in popularity and respect.

Don't let the opening Photobucket page fool you, the Sub-Albums for specific work can be found at the right side of the opening page.  Hope these photos help in some way for those of you that visit and intend to take on your own project.

Mike,

I love these pics, I keep referring to them to keep me going in my rebuild. I finally got to the bottom of the strip down (after 2 years and 5 months... ::)) and now bits are off everywhere getting painted & fixed etc.

Can't wait to start posting my albums as she gets built up, looking to hit the road in May!
