Spline Lube
« on: September 06, 2009, 05:59:52 PM »
I was reading the new maintenance manual I got about two weeks ago for the BMW Z-3 that I have .

It is stated upon removing the (manual) transmission, before installation, to clean and lubricate the transmission input shaft splines, and the mating splines on the clutch disc , looks like it's not just the motorcycles need this !!

Wow, so not only are their motorcycles becoming like their cars, but their cars are becoming like their bikes !

I guess there is some strange Germanic Zen-like quality to that - the Yin and Yang of the Bavarian world..

And per that new manual, Bob, how often are your supposed to yank the transmission outta the Z3 for a spline lube?  ;D

It's 'on condition', whenever the transmission is removed , no specified time, or mileage requirement is stated .

This is the first maintenance manual I've seen by Bentley Publishers, I would highly recommend them, this manual is light years ahead of any manual I've seen so far .

Agree. I have had my 1986 VW Cabriolet Bentley for nearly eleven years. I have others but the Bentley is tops. The manual, although pricey, pays for itself with the first DIY repair.

When I first started looking for a manual in 2002, the going price for the Z-3 version, was just under $200, didn't think it was worth the price .

Got mine from Amazon.com, for a little under $80, including shipping .

I thought you were supposed to lube those splines on any tranny, at least if you're in the area.  I think I've always done it, with each clutch change anyway.
